Okay, I did a search, didn't find quite what I was wondering about, so here we go...
As I mentioned in another thread, the company I work for recently had a camera returned that's been missing for two and a half years. Today, I was playing with it--um, I mean I was evaluating it
, and I noticed that, when recording sound with the built-in mic, I was getting what I considered to be an incredible amount of noise that I think was coming from the tape deck.
Now, the odd thing was, when I plugged in an external mic (a Sennheiser ME80), and put that mic right up against the tape deck, I didn't hear the same noise.
So, is there something else I'm hearing? Or could there be something going on, where there's a vibration going through the body of the camera? I also noticed that, if I turned the scene file dial, I got a lot of noise from that that I couldn't believe the built-in mic could even hear.
Or is this something else entirely? One thread I found via search suggested that the auto-focus system could generate noise, and I did have it in AF the whole time I was testing; but I guess I find it hard to believe that the AF could make that much noise.
I should also mention that the camera has definitely taken some damage. The cover over IR receiver at the back of the carrying handle is smashed (although the IR receiver itself still works), and there's actually a crack in the handle just behind the "1 2 3" zoom speed switch.
It's probably going to Fox Valley anyway for the handle issues, and probably a general "tuneup" (or would "overhaul" be a better automotive metaphor? Hell, at this point, we may be "putting in a short-block"
); just wondered if anybody here had any thoughts.
