So I bought a used DVX100a sometime back, and it already had a lot of hours on it. (750 hrs), this was before I came to the forum and started learning about that type of information. Anyways, I was capturing footage into Final Cut because I didnt have another camera to use to capture, so i figured it wouldnt hurt this time. Well it was capturing and then it had an error that caused it to stop. I then tried to restart it, and now nothing is coming up, the timecode turns into --:--:---- and it stays that way. I can rewind, and FF but cant get anything to come up to the screen.

Is there a chance my headers gone bad now? or can there be a different reason for this? Ive tried different tapes, and nothing is working.

You could try a head cleaning tape. Be sure to follow the instructions.

Dirty heads degrade performance over time. They don't just all in a sudden stop. (In my experience) I dought it's your heads. Are you sure your not in an area of the tape with nothing recorded? FCP doesn't like blank tapes. Do you have a friend with a minidv cam you can try play back in? Most of us keep a junky cam around for digitizing.

Yeah im sure im not at a blank part of the tape, I have recorded over the whole thing, and I tried a few other tapes that also have footage on them too. I don't know anyone off top that has another minidv camera, but I will ask around. Like I said, it was going fine, then stopped, and has refused since then. ill play with it some more and update on progress.

Does it make a sound like the tape is moving or is it just stuck. It could be a bad motor. if it's moving tape and not playing that leeds to head failure, but like i said before they don't just fail all in a sudden. It could be wiring to the head and not dirty heads. Next step would be to have panny take look :(. The monitor works when not in vtr mode and seems to record right?

Hey, first off I'd like to thank you for taking the time to try and help me pinpoint this issue. I appreciate it. Now for the update, after using a head cleaner tape, it seems to be working again. However I have been continuing having this issue http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8siNlfVVOkM .. In the past it hasnt been this bad, but from the last tape, it happened more then normal. (However the tape that it happened the most on, I recorded over three different times, but even for the first time of being recorded, it would happen at least once, if not twice during a full tape. Any idea?

I'd get your heads cleaned professionally by panny or another authorized repair place. I'v seenthat on taped that wer taped over 4 and 5 times, but if you saw it ont he first record it not a tape ishue and is a head ishue. The tape cleaners work, but most recomend a pro head cleaning every 50-100 hours. Have you ever gotten a pro cleaning?

Nah, I have never sent it in yet, For the camera is still pretty new to me. It has a lot of hours, but I haven't put too many hours onto it. How much does it run? Do I just go to the panasonic website?

I'll google and see what I find.

If you're in the SF bay area, there a about a billion video servicing places. You shouldn't have to send it in. It's better if you can walk it in and talk to the tech.

I don't know if they do repairs, but ask these people for advice:

http://www.media-solutions.us/

They are in Benicia just before the bridge. You should know about them - I used to drive down from Sac to buy tape stock, media and supplies from them.
