Dvx100a or hv30 or s100?

So i have a vx2000 right now and im not really happy about how it performs. i really love the look of the dvx100a and its footage, although the hv and s100 footage may be better the though of going back to white balancing through a menu and such just makes me cringe. i tryed posting this on skateperception a while back but go no real effective advise. I mainly film skateboarding but am getting into weddings and short stories. Im leaning towards the dvx right now but what are your opinions?

For skating, I would go for the DVX100B. I love the colors and the audio sounds great. The HV20/30 cameras are pretty good, but like the VX, you get more respect with a bigger camera. THere are some great deals right now on used DVX's so I would go for one. The s100 is another option. Since it is a DSLR, you can take some nice skating stills and wedding stills but the functionality on DSLRs in video mode is extremely limited. The one drawback is that the DVX is not HD, but that's not too important.

Go for a DVX100A, if you are getting into short films I think the DVX would suit you the best. I just "upgraded" from an HV30 to a DVX100A and I'm beyond happy. I know the HV30 is basically all menu driven and has no manual controls but the DVX fixes that perfectly. One of the main reasons I went to a DVX was for manual controls. And as far as the HD hype, I've seen DVX upressed to HD and I've done it. No complaints. And the HV30 rolling shutter is atrocious. I also used to own a VX2100 which was more then sufficient in the manual control area but I didn't own it for long. And DVX compared to VX is still MUCH different.

If he's talking about the 'HF'S100, then I'm not sure I'd call it a 'DSLR'. It has the capacity to take 8 megapixel stills, but it was designed as a camcorder.

It's also a great camera, more manual controls and higher image quality than the HV30, and I believe HD makes a difference, but it's true that it doesn't have that more professional feel you get with the DVX.

I have used both the VX2000 and the 2100, I was not a big fan of either. It has been a while since I have used one, but the one thing that I really remember was that it felt like I was using a big consumer handycam as opposed to a smaller pro or even prosumer camera. I really like having as many manual controls as possible the little consumer cams infuriate me because it feels like I can't control the image the way I want to (though, oddly enough, I love my little flip-cam), with the dvx there are settings for damn near everything and I love it.

Plus, the dvx just looks cooler.

ok. thanks for everyones advise. i'm getting a deal for a dvx100a with 170 hours for 1400 CAD which is pretty darn good. the only thing is the screws on the mic and vf are misaligned but the seller says the dont affect anything, theres also no screw for the zoom ring. are these okay things to be wrong? im just making sure because im buying it online.

Thanks

Depends which screws are missing. You can probably fix some of those by harvesting screws from parts of the camera that can miss one screw. THe zoom ring screw is nice but it won't affect anything. Check partstore.com for screws.

go with the DVX. i did and i don't regret it. would there really be a forum this big, plus a huge fan base for a camera that people didn't thing was genuinely awesome?

I had the same problem when deciding on a camera. I now have a DVX100 and I love it. Like AndytheFilmer said, the DVX isn't HD, but if you've ever worked with a prosumer camera then you'll understand videography/photography more (..atleast I did!). I'm shooting events like weddings, anniversaries, and graduations and the settings on the DVX100 require not much extra equipment, but the HV20 or HV30 would need some upgrades.

Whichever camera you end up purchasing just make sure you have fun doing whatever you do with it. :)
