DVX100a o.k. for local broadcast?

I was recently offered a gig producing daily news segments which will run on local station affiliates across the country.
The spots are simple- one camera/one take. About 2 hours of work.

The delivery needs to be Beta SP. Which I can do.

The cameraman who worked the gig before me used a Panasonic DVCpro Camera.
I do not want to have rent a camera package every few weeks.
Can the DVX produce an image that the stations will accept?
MiniDV dumped to Beta.

To date I have only used the camera for off air work- so I am a bit worried.

Thanks

I've been doing it for about a year now, for several different affiliates.
Check with the stations engineering department. I don't think that there's much of a problem. I have shot spot news, features, as well as commericials.

Im not sure if Im helping with my answer but....

Most of what I do that ends up on a broadcast is shot with a pd150 or a dvx... so... yeah. The dvx is fine for TV.

But we don't use BetaSP. We're strictly dv... and I'm not enough of a technician to give good advice but... yes? Sure. Why not.

I can't count the shows I've seen on Discovery/TLC/Style/H&G/MTV/etc shot with pd's and dvx's so...

Why not? But then again... the only time i've even seen a betasp deck was when a certain producer was saying "I'm not even sure why we have that anymore...."

That said... I'm no grizzled veteran so...

Good question :P

Oh.

Can't you capture as uncompressed dv before throwing it to betasp? Might that help if it REALLY mattered? Just a thought.. no experience in how to actually do it.

yes.
I am going to capture at 1:1 into my Avid and then spit out beta dubs for stations.
I think I'm fine- but they want 30fps.....no 24p.
Thanks.

I've shot tonnes of stuff for brodcast on my DVX. No problems, just make sure you brodcast render your final project in your NLE before you export. Check with the station for their preffered levels (Some stations don't what luma above 110ire, some are more strict and want everything topping out at 100ire)

24p is really not that common for anything other than dramatic programming. Anything reality/sports etc. just looks crap in 24p - in my oppinion. 30p or 29.97 are your best bets.

oh and i REALLY don't think there's any benefit at all to doing uncompressed capture of 4:1:1 material unless you're doing croma key/heavy colour correction etc. - and even then, the benefit is close to negligable.

"Uncompressed" DV??? DV IS compressed. What you ger through the firewire port is already compressed, either it's coming from the tape or straight from the camera. There's NO differnece in quality between the feed from the camera and the same thing already recorded on tape. Hope this helps..

You should have no problems as long as your stuff is in spec; H-blanking no wider than 10.8microfarads, vertical blanking 20-21 lines, blacks 7.5, whites no greater than 105, and audio not overmodualted. If you have a proper method to the beta, (RGB out of the computer) and audio, then your system should do it all for you properly (except the audio and video levels which you need to make sure fall into 7.5-100 range and that color is not out of spec). It matters not what format one uses. There is no such thing as broadcast quality only broadcast spec which says a picture fits into the broadcast picture properly. Thats why Americans funniest home videos can show home made tapes on TV.

In the USA is there the new craze of using camera phone footage on the news!?

If the content is there, they'll use ANYTHING.
