dvx100a noise

ok, folks....
i love my cam, i really do...
but what's up with the noise in low light?

Actually, i may want a scene to be dark in some areas...
but i've noticed the grainy noise that pops up, and it just truly degrades the quality of the shot.

What are some of your ideas/suggestions to fix this. I really hope that this could be taken care of in the camera settings, instead of filming in a well light environment, and then darken/change the contrast in post.

Help me out.....much tks

Re: dvx100a noise

Yeah this has been said before but I am not able to find that old topic, could someone post the recipe again?

BTW, it is possible to get lower noise in the darks, because I have seen a lot of footage here much cleaner than mine... :(

Re: dvx100a noise

Mostly just turn gamma to high, then turn the matrix to normal (the cinematrix adds tons of noise.) Adjust detail coring, too, if you have the 100a. And don't crush the blacks with the master_ped; keep it at 0 or higher.

But honestly, if you're not using external lighting, you won't get good results. For event videographer I suppose low-light shooting is necessary, but for dramatic content, it's infinitely better to light even a little.

Re: dvx100a noise

I'm just getting best results by adding CC in post and lowering the blacks compressing everything that is under the 30% mark. I guess the small VF tricks you into thinking the usable latitude of the camera is better than it actually is. Just getting used to see 30% IRE as dark, even tough it looks good on the EVF is enough, I guess. So filling out shadows that are under 30% is a choice, or just know they will have to go in post. No big deal, really. I guess to some extent it is just about getting used to seeing the EVF and not be afraid of opening up a notch or two...

This is a test I did few days ago (I didn't convert the pixel aspects, so...):

Re: dvx100a noise

I am seriously beggining to think that I am one of a very few number of people who does not have problems with noise with this camera. First of all, I never use any matrix except for normal, and I always keep my detail coring turned up fairly high. I have shot everything from documentarys to short films to weddings (where the reception is lit only by my 35watt on camera light) to very low lit band concerts, and the only one that every showed any noise was the concert and that was because the lighting was out of my hands, and in the hands of some idiot!
I have shots will the full range of IRE and if lit correctly, will experience no grain at all, even in the 30% range. I really wish I could be more helpful to people, however I really don't have an answer as to why everyone is experiencing so much grain.

Re: dvx100a noise

ozone1979,

I own a DVX100A and here are my settings to reduce noise and still get an image very close to cinelike color matrix:

                                                         GAMMA SETTING
                                                       HIGH    or     Cinelike D
detail level:                                          0                     0
vdetail level:                                        0                     0
detail coring:                                        0                     0
chroma level: (see color matrix setting)  +2                  +4
chroma phase:                                    +2                  +2
color temp:                                          0                     0
master ped:                                         -1                   -5
auto iris:   (as a starting point only...)     -3                    -3
knee:                                                 low              non adjustable
color matrix:                                     normal            normal
v detail freq:                                       thin                thin

but i rarely use the "cinelike" color matrix setting, if you do, then set the color level to 0.

let me know if you like it.

Taubkin,

this picture has some noise but it looks very good though.
Could you post the original grab and your camera settings ?

thanks

Re: dvx100a noise

I don't know how to find all that out... but I was playing it again and got this: f 5.6 and 6dB.

hahahaha I guess I do have a grain issue (in my brain).

I don't remember exactly the settings but it was F6 with pedestal at -9 if I recall.

and thanks! I was just testing out possible lighting setups for an upcoming shot...

Re: dvx100a noise

Antoine_Fabi,

I tried the settings for cinelike D, well all of the except for the knee. Mine stays at auto for some reason. And what i got was a picture that had more clipping to black (or just darker) and yes, less grain. Much tks.

I guess the best way to eliminate the grain is prolly to use ctrl lighting and in post adjust the levels, adding more contrast and alll, like taubkin's method.
