DVX100A mysterious shut off (??)

Hello, all.

When shooting today, at least twice (with different batteries) while recording, my DVX100A simply shut off completely. No on/off button accidentally turned off. No loose battery.

Both batteries (a "5-hr" and the shipped-with "2-hour") had been fully charged the night before.

In both cases, the battery indicator on LCD display showed a well-charged (or fully charged) battery. And, the shooting time was well within range of the battery life.

Switched to AC power -- oddly enough, the battery indicator still showed in display. If I recall correctly, even once when connected to AC, it powered down. The house lights flickered too, so a surge would seem obvious there but not with battery power.

Anyone had this experience?

Short somewhere in camera? Sign from the Universe? My bad luck?

Read the manual. I forget what page, but after like 5 mins the camera has an auto-shut off for saving battery power. You can disable it though. It tells you how in your manual

Nope, not it. That feature WAS disabled. Besides, even when enabled, it is not suppose to shut the camera off while _recording_.

Hey NoPun,

We have a dvx in our service center now with that same problem. I'll let you know as soon as I hear something from the techs.

Very much appreciate that. I had to send my DVX100 to the shop within the first two weeks of owning it. I have had this DVX100A (a replacement from Panasonic) for a year -- used very little (so far) and babied always. It went to the shop once already.

Very disappointing.

It might be shorting out somewhere.

Everytime I tilt the viewfinder, mine shorts out completely. It was the ribbon that attaches the EVF to the body.

Did you send it to authorized service center for repair? If so, do you recall the time/money charge for repair?

Oops, sorry. For some reason the part about it shutting off WHILE recording didn't register to me. That sucks man. Good luck w/ it.

After it turns off can you turn it back on or is the battery dead at that point? I have found that when leaving the camera on for long periods of time the battery indicator doesnt gradually go down, I think you have to turn the camera on and off again for the battery level to change. I have had mine turn off on me with a full read on the battery because I hadnt turned the camera off in a while. The camera makes all sorts of horrible clunking noises and it sounds like the camera is breaking to pieces almost, but its always fine, just the sound of the camera suddenly turning off after losing battery power.
Could you be experiencing the same thing?
