dvx100a & dvx100b

I know that the 100b has improved upon user aspects. However, is the end product of each camera the same? Im asking this because Im thinking about using a 100a and 100b on a project. Im just wanting to make sure that what they both produce will be compatible with each other and that I wont run into some sort of issue during editing. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

less noisy, as in noise in the footage... really? I never knew that... I assumed they used the same lens, and same chip for the color and everything.

Panasonic said they improved the signal to noise ration on the B. I've yet to see a side by side, so I don't know if this equates to a real world improvement.

I'm sure someone has posted some comparison footage somewhere.

That's cool! So, I'm still using an original DVX. I am probably way worse than the new B. Would it be wise to try and sell this one, and get a new B?

I compared the 100 against the 100B and noticed lower noise. I didn't try the 100A against the 100B.

I know AshG has made comment about the lower noise of the 100B, I don't know if he's comparing against the 100 or the 100A though. If he's comparing against the 100A that would give us another data point.

Briceman, I never bothered to upgrade from the 100 to the 100A; I thought the upgrades were nice and all, but not quite enough. Once the 100B came out though, I sold my 100 off. Of course, now that I have an HVX I rarely use the 100B, so -- there's always something better. Always. But remember, the original 100 lensed the film that won the best-cinematography award at sundance 2004, so it's not like you've got a slacker camera on your hands! There's just more features and more refinements in the 100B, but if you're happy with your 100 there's no compelling reason to change.

i used a 100 and an 100A covering a Dance audition. They looked different, like color and gamma and stuff, but that just cause i didnt match them up. I actually think the 100 put out a more oraganic picture.

Dont worry too much about upgrading. They are practically the same. Its a subtle difference.

I would suggest you just upgrade to the 100a if you really need to upgrade at all; since the 100a and 100b are pretty much the same, except for the minor noise and change in the sensitivity of the microphone -- it's probably better for you to save money for other things.

The 100B has a higher res LCD - supposedly better for focusing. The B has a new tape drive which is supposed to be for durable but doesn't allow the camera to have an intervalometer. The B has live audio monitoring (no delay).

*if* you were to choose to upgrade, I'd say go to the "B" no question, unless you can afford an HVX and if so, go for the HVX no question.

But if you have no compelling need to upgrade, why spend the dough?

Well barry theres the want vs. Need....

I want a Hvx... Do i need it? ( well to make my soul happy a resounding YES)

no....

What Timur meant is that on the 100B, the "squeeze" mode displays in the proper 16:9 aspect ratio in the viewfinder and on the LCD. The 100A can't do that.

There are many very nice operational niceties in the 100B.
