DVX100A & DVX100B Slave Together Settings

Before you say it ... I know, I know ... buy a cheap DV camera for the slave but instead of that I bought a cheap DVX100A for $400.00 with no audio as a "Camera B View" and to take parts off if needed for my 100B.

Now the question: I have a shoot tomorrow and I was going to use the slave mode in the 100B and I set it to that but I will be capturing in the 100A. I need to do a 3 hour video and I was not sure if the 100A (slave) should be set to "off" or "chain".

I do not think I have ever found this subject talked about (I know ... everyone slaves a cheap camera) on the forums. I keep asking myself "why keep all of the hours off of the camera" when it may be out of date for me soon. So better to use them than let them fade away.

Thanks!

Not sure I'm following you -- are you planning on shooting the event on your 100B, but you're using the 100A as the recording deck? is that right?

Do you want to capture continuously, recording on the 100B and then toggling over to the 100A when the 100B's tape is about empty? If so, use "chain" on the 100B.

If you only want the 100A to record, set the 100B to "EXT" and it'll control the 100A.

As for the 100A's menu settings, they don't matter. When you put it in VCR mode it'll take its commands from the 100B.

Maybe that is the answer ... Set the 100A to VCR. I need the 100B to shoot and record to #1 tape and then when full start the 100A to record what the 100B sees to #2 tape (in the 100A) and when the 100A is full, go back to the newly inserted #3 tape of the 100B.

So it seems the settings should be: 100B Chain & 100A in VCR mode?

With this they will keep going back and forth recording the images from the 100B to which ever deck until full and then switch to the deck with the new unrecorded tape?

So the 100B in Chain knows when the 100A in VCR mode's tape is full and the 100B will automatically start recording on its record head as long as it has a new tape?

Thanks
Ken

You're mostly right, but it won't go back and forth, it'll just go from the 100B over to the 100A. So you would record in the 100B until the tape is almost full, at which point it would automatically trigger the 100A to start recording. Then you'd swap out the tape in the 100B for a new fresh one, and when the 100A is almost full you'd manually start recording on the 100B again.
