Hi all, first time poster here to this excellent forum. I am interested in the DVX100A and have a question from owners.

How is the build quality? I have owned the Canon XL-1, GL-1 and a Sony PD150, and just want to know how the DVX100A compares to those two.

Any help you can provide will be. Thanks.

Re: DVX100A build quality

Not really sure about the point ??? of that previous comment. Maybe someone else has something useful to contribute.

Re: DVX100A build quality

Sorry Roger, you caught me in one of those wise ass moods. Now on to your question...

Build Quality? It is very solid at 4 lbs. I have heard of (nightmare) someone (Jarred, did you tell us this story?)actually dropping it and it still working fine.

I treat my DVX like a newborn infant as it is but I know some treat it like an Iraqi War Correspondent would.

Re: DVX100A build quality

Yeah.... Ive seen it fly, bounce, spin, dive, crash and flip a few times... The only thing that happens is the LCD screen gets a little loose.

Re: DVX100A build quality

Thanks John, and the rest of you guys.

What I am also interested in is the 'feel' of the camera. My PD-150 was extremely solid, and built like a tank, mainly because of the metal construction. How does the DVX100A compare? Is it 'plasticky' or comparable to the PD-150? Not that I plan to bash it around. I am very careful with my gear, and always try to be meticulous with it. My philosophy is if I take care of it then it will not crap out on me at the most inopportune moment. Still, accidents happen. Good to hear that it can take a licking.

I also used a Canon XL-1 and was pleased with the quality of this camera. A documentary short I did with this can be viewed at http://www.digitalfilmmaker.com/sevenlillies/text.html

Thanks for the feedback, anymore comments on the quality of the DVX100A would be greatly appreciated.

Re: DVX100A build quality

The casing of the DVX looks like plastic, but it's not. The 100 has a magnesium casing, and I understood it was actually going to be improved for the A.

Re: DVX100A build quality

My 100A is a very solid camera. It feels like you could throw it against a wall and still pick it up and shoot. Well, maybe not THROW it, but perhaps a few bumps and knocks. The magnesium body gives it some solid heft.

Re: DVX100A build quality

I agree. It has a fell that is LIGHT but in being of magnesium it is very solid. It's like the first time I picked up a titanium watch; I was like WTF is this? When in reality it is very tough.

Re: DVX100A build quality

I really appreciate your replies. :) Thanks for takig the time to respond to my questions.

Re: DVX100A build quality

I have not held a DVX100A in my hands, but i guess it's the same as the DVX100 (non A).

IMHO the PD-150 feels more solid than the DVX100. The DVX100 is well built and probably will not brake, but my first thoughts as a PD-150 user, when i got it in my hands were "fragile and plastic". Anyway, it's a great camera and after some time with it you will notice it's not that fragile at all. It's in fact a very solid little camera, that'll go with you wherever you go.

Re: DVX100A build quality

I remember there was an article on Panasonic's DVX100 DV Cinema page about someone who took the DVX to the Antartic to shoot a documentary. He said it held up incredibly well in extreme conditions.

I was crazy enough to take my DVX out in a blizzard in Vermont. Held up great for me. I feel much more confident with my DVX's build quality than the PD-150 i use for work.
