DVX100a/b Tripods?

Hello all,

Just curious on if anyone had any opinions on any Tripod's for the DVX? I plan on purchasing a Velbon El Carmagne 530 though I was curious on if anyone had used it on a DVX? I read some great reviews on it although I can't seem to find much about it's uses on a DVX100a/b. It seems it would work fine with it but I figure I would see what everyone else thinks.

Opinions?

I use manfrotto tripods only. My way to check it out is set it up with the head you want to use, put your hand on top, push down and move your hand to check stability. You want a solid base for the camera and one that will support the weight

So you do think using the particular Tripod I specified isn't a good recommendation? Reason I ask is notice that I see it listed as $280 on B&H's site while a local retailer (Best Buy) has it for $199. I guess the price throws me off. lol.

While the legs are important, the head is the most import to be able to produce smooth pans & tilts while rolling tape. At the price range you're talking about, you won't find a very good head or legs. $500 seems to be the minimum to get some thing serviceable. Some folks will tell you that the minimum is $1000 too. You want to get a fluid head for better results.

I don't know about Velbon either but the price seems way too low to get the smoothness you'll want.

The Velbon you listed is not a video head BTW. It's a carbon firbre tripod for still cameras. I just bought a Velbon DV-7000. It weighs 10 lbs so it's very stable. Paid $115 at Amazon.com. I just tested it out yesterday and was able to do pretty smooth pans and tilts. Probably most of the guys here will go for a higher end tripod but I have no complaints with mine. If your a hobby/enthusiast like me the Velbon is fine. There are a lot of professionals here on this forum. If you really need the silky smooth pan/tilt of a true fluid head, spend the money. Besides, you're not going to impress too many people whipping out your Velbon.

Edit. Not Amazon. B&H Photo Video. $110 right now. They have a nice carrying bag for over the shoulder for $20 more.

I've had great experience with Libec. They're really inexpensive but they do what I need them to. I used to have a TH-M20 which was $180 plus taxes, but I upgraded to a TH-950DV for $305 including shipping from the UK (it is NOT sold in the US AT ALL for some reason). Really good head, despite having fixed drag. It's fixed just in the right position for a camera about the weight of a DVX. The legs are very lightweight too, not extremely stable though. They get the job done fine for me.
You could get an LS22M2A, which has the same head, the H22DV, but the only difference is the legs have set screw locks and the whole thing costs $500. Not worth it in my opinion, but that's for what I do, where I need it to set up very quickly.
Also, Sachtler makes some really nice heads, my school has two FSB 2 single stage tripods. Those are closer to $750 though.
