DVX100A Audio

Is it normal not to see any red / pegging on my monitor's audio meter during recording? I'm using a Shure SM11 mic (old but in excellent cond.) that's plugged into Input 2, have both Channel Selectors set at Input 2 and have the Mic Power switches set in the Off position.

I actually turned the Channel 1 and 2 dials all the way up for a short time but only saw "RED" when I talked loudly.

With them turned up 3/4 of the way, the monitor's VU meter displayed even levels etc. The sound coming thru the headphones that I used while taping (although cheap) sounded strong with slight hissing / back ground noise. When played back thru my Solitaire editor and adjoining monitor, the sound qualitiy was very good. I may have noticed some back ground noise with maximum volume but assume some or most of that could have been coming from the monitor.

Am I over looking something?

No, you normally want a few dots of red, otherwise you're recording way too low.

Check the mic/line level switch on the front of the camera. Also look in the recording setup for the -50/-60 audio gain, you might try toggling that over to see if it helps.

The "Mic - Line" switches (located on the front of the camcorder) are set as follows: Input 1 is set at Mic and Input 2 is set in the Mic position. Since I'm using Input 2 for my mic cable etc, I thought that the all was set properly.

OK, I went into the Recording Set-up and reset from -50 to -60 and that seemed to work but I don't understand why. Moving -50 to -60 seems like it would deminish the sound input. Can anyone explain?
