DVX100A Audio Question

I'm new to this forum so if I've entered my question inappropriately, please direct me accordingly.

If I connect a Shure SM11 mic into my camcorder, will it automatically set gain and deactivate the on-board mic. I've only used the "on-board" mic and am unfamiliar with navigating thru the menus so I'd rather leave well enough alone. I just need to shoot a talking head but want to mic the person instead of using the on-board microphone. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Under the flip-out LCD, there are audio switches that determine mic usage. Set the switches to the input that you've plugged your XLR cable into. The best way to go is to plug into input 2 and set both channels to that input.

Thanks very much for getting back to me.

Let me see if I understand.

1. Plug the XLR cable into input 2.
2. Set the Ch1 and Ch2 switches (located behind the flip out LCD monitor) both to Ch.2.

How about the Input 1 and Input 2 switches that are located in the same area? They're presently in the OFF position.

How do I determin what audio levels to use or is that done automatically?

Do I need to do anything else?

Don't have a camera in front of me, but I'm guessing those are the phantom power switches you're talking about. If so, the SM11 mic shouldn't need phantom power, so you should leave them OFF--but it's been a long time since I played with an SM11, so you might want to test that just to be sure...

Audio levels are adjusted by the two dials located just below the LCD screen. There is an audio level meter that you can see in the viewfinder. You want your peaks to go into the red, but not all the way to the last red line.
