DVX100A and EXTERNAL MIC QUESTION!!!!

Ok, so i've been shooting on the dVX100a since the model came out many years ago. I got a lav for it @ that time and each time i pluged it in and had the setting to MIC the audio would blow out like crazy(huge static). BUt when i would turn the audio from mic to line it was fine.

Now, i'm shooting on a hpx170 and when i have my lav on mic its fine. My understanding is that LINE is for mixers and MIc is for shotgun, lav etc.

Am i doing something wrong here?

thanks.

LINE is for "line level" sources, i.e. sources that are amplified already (like from a mixer), MIC is for plugging a microphone directly into the camera, and using the camera's preamps. The audio always needs to be amplified before it goes through the camera's A/D converters, that switch just decides what does the amplification: the camera (MIC) or an external source (LINE).

That static could be from using 2 preamps at the same time (the signal from the receiver to the camera is strong enough then the camera amplifies it even more). On the DVX, it could have just been that the A/D converters were more sensitive and could not handle all that amplification, while the HPX couldn't get a strong enough signal with just the receiver, and so the camera (HPX) would have to amplify it for conversion.

That's my guess.

Try switching on and off the phantom power for that channel on the side of the camera in the panel that is exposed when the lcd is flipped out and replace the small watch batteries in the mic if your has them.
