DVX100A and B squeeze mode question..

This is directed to anyone who can answer and please be realistic.

I have used the DVX100 and the XL2. I shoot primarily in 16x9 mode and can see a huge difference in the XL2 16x9 versus the LB mode of DVX100. I have never seen the 100a squeeze mode so I have no frame of reference for what it looks like but most are unhappy about the stretch. How bad is it in comparison to the XL2? I need a new smaller 24P 16x9 camera and the 100B may be the ticket. (in fact it may be the only small camera with 24p)

When I cut the XL2 with DVX100 letterbox I have to uprez in vegas to convert the letterbox of the DVX to true 16x9 footage. But it takes a pretty big hit in clarity and softens quite a bit.

How does the squeeze mode compare and where can I see actual samples of squeeze mode?

Thanks in advance.

Its not true 16x9 with squeeze mode. THe new 100B basically allows you to see the entire image when shooting in squeeze mode, thus it doesn't look squeezed. The XL2 however has native widescreen CCDS so that's why your footage will look better. When shooting squeeze mode and letterbox mode within the DVX, you are losing about 30% resolution, that's why I only shoot 4:3 and crop if need be. The HVX will solve this little problem however with native widescreen chips. Thats one of the biggest factors for me in buying this new cam.

When I say "true widescreen" in my post above I meant converting 4x3 tagged avi's to 16x9 tagged avis and doing away with the blackbars. I never meant to imply I thought it was magically as good as natively captured 16x9.

it depends on your final display medium.

i only show my work on TV,s and SD projectors so the squeeze mode looks Great. Especailly when you letterbox on the DVD. Even if it has lower resolution. the letterboxing out of the DVD player is only using that center stripe of the TV screen, so it uses up all the available resolution that 380 or so scan lines has to offer. So youre probably not going to notice. Now if youre showing on a 16:9 monitor/projector or a HD television then the image will look soft when compared to the XL2.

i am in turkey: and the compters here are all like 56K Pentium II with 333Mhtz processors..... so i am having difficulty uploading a grab for you. i apologize.

Thanks. If anyone can upload a few grabs, maybe an identical shot in 4x3 and then in squeeze mode. I have been "converting" letterbox using vegas and lately it is starting to not look so good to my eye while the 16x9 of the XL2 is looking razor sharp. I am hoping the squeeze mode on the camera is better than the vegas method.

Also...I tried the demo of photozoom that disjecta has used and the workflow is too long for the massive amount of footage I convert.

Thanks!

i think it will look better than the vegas stretched footage. just make sure its on THIN detail mode when you use the 100A or 100B...... that can reallly ruin the footage cause then it will be unacceptably soft.
