DVX100A Alternatives?

My 100A has performed wonderfully and although I'll continue to use it for a while, what might be some good replacements in its price field?

I'm also looking for a cheaper back up and would appreciate any comments.

Lastly, what sort of external storage devices can I use in place of the small mini DV cassettes?

You can use fire stores that plug into your firewire port The allow quite a bit of SD recording. The fs-100 is only about 300 bucks on ebay and is about 6-10 tapes worth.

the dvx 100a is a pretty cheap camera and it is a solid design. I dont think the other brands really do as well. most of us are upgrading to hd though since the dvx is sd.

These days, why don't you pick up a used HVX200? Faith Granger shot her feature, Deuce of Spades, with an HVX and a letus extreme adaptor. Buy up a copy. Watch it. After you pick your jaw up off the ground, you'll see once and for all why it ain't the pencil that makes the drawing!

I've only occasionally used DV-Tapes with my two DVX-100As. Mostly I've used firewire capture to DV-Rack (now called Adobe OnLocation) straight to laptop. I picked up two long firewire cables from Laird. One a thirty footer and the other a 70 footer. Only used the 70 footer a handful of times as the thirty footer was used the most. Both cables are 4 pin to 6 pin and then use an 6 to 4 pin adapter. The reason for one end being 6 pin was just in case I need to plug into a mac from time to time. (I Still have the original big box of tapes and both cameras show 12 hrs and 23 hrs respectively of head use.)

If you are interested, I have a Firestore 80GB for sale. Can record 366 min in raw DV. Included with a 90-min. battery, mounting kit, and 2 firewire cords. PM me if anyone is interested...

HXV to tape looks GREAT! We rarely used it but each time we did, I was blown away.

And you can find a used HVX for a song these days.
