That was my argument a few months back. I still tend to think so. The mini35 is great, but it has always seemed like something that doesn't quite fit to me.
Yeah, I would have liked to have seen 28 days in DVX style. 28 days looks awesome on the tele though.
But the dvd was made from a film transfer, which I was a bit upset about. I mean, why go through that film step when the digital files exist? It seemed like a waste to me, ostensibly just to make the image look grainier.
IMDB states in the tech details that the film was shot with:
Canon XL-1S PAL (of course)
The DVD commentary also mentions the XL1s.
I'm not saying I know for sure, but I would like to get to the bottom of this. I read and watched alot about the making of this picture and it always mentions the XL1s and NEVER mentions film.
Also, it was up to 10 XL's.
Again, I'm not disputing anything here, I would like to see if we can't get this confirmed somehow?
AMERICAN CINEMATOGRAPHER confirms that "28 Days Later" was shot with an XL1 with an OPTEX B4-XL adaptor and some CANON EC and EJ Hi-Def primes.
A hundred sources says XL1 and the other hundred says XL1s...
I gurantee you some shots where film.. Canon wishes some of those scenes (specially the ending) where done with the XL1. If you watch the DVD BTS stuff you can see some 35's kicking around on set as well.
Remember, this wasn't a low budget feature, there was no reason to use the XL1 other than the look it gave and the fact that the creators are kinda kooky like that.
As for the XL1 or XL1s, it doesnt really matter.. both cameras have the same CCD's and the XL1s just ads some extra settings like color gain and sharpness... not that big of a deal, not even as dramatic of an upgrade as the DVX100A.
yes.. it's the telephone effect.. as information travels from site to site little tidbits get added or removed and eventually you get a totally different story.

Somebody call Danny Boyle!
The American Cinematographer article is what I'm taking as most accurate, since it's a direct interview with the guy who shot it, so he should know.
In it, it mentions XL1 cameras, which is quite surprising, I would have expected the XL1s. The IMDB can be inaccurate, it all depends on how accurate the source of the information is (I've entered stuff in there, so I know just about anyone can!)
Guys, hey i know i'm a newbie here, and i've really wanted to know about how the dvx + P+S tek combo would work out, however if you dont have the money to buy a P+S how about.....
Long ago, long long (hell you get the idea) anywayz whilst "surfing" in terms of internet surfing as opposed to actual surfing i.e getting all excited and wet (hmm.. same thing could be said about internet surfing too, depends on what kinda websites you go to )
err.. yes anyway i happen to trip over the P+S a while back and thought hey why cant i just shove my camera into the viewfinder of a SLR camera and record that. So i scrambled madly into the garage and like a drug addict started seeking the one (SLR camera).. eventually found it try it, worked kinda, but there was all this black darkness in the corners so gave up on the whole idea.
BAck to present time..
again whilst surfing quite recently on another furom (i know shame, shame on me) on a website that shall remain unnamed..
what did i discover? well, seems great minds thinks alike..
it seems some guy (Agus Casse) thought hey i aint gonner pay that kinda of money, i'll build one for $15 bucks.... and he did.
Now his making a tutorial on how to make one, and some people have already made on for a sony vx2k or similar and the results well judge for your self and decide for yourself...
This is really amazing!!!!
Great to see it work on a DVX.
Note you might have a problem playing some of the video/wmv files. If you do "Save target as...desktop"
this will allow you to view the AWESOME look of this tool.
I told ya that, this is something Veery interesting....
i think i'll wait for the tutorial and then make a proper version using metal as opposed to using cardboard, hell i just use the CNC's/ CAD/CAMS at my Uni, the construction should be dead easy, i'll lathe some supprort rods and connecting bush, actually....
if anyone can send me some CAD design (to engineering standard BS308)
i'll try and build one, i.e based on Agus Casse principle (not using CD spindles duh!! of course )
