DVX100 vs. DVX100A

I was about to begin production using a DVX100 that I just saved up to buy. My problem, however, is that I will not be able to afford to keep it. Understandably, this isn't the best of options, but my desires have gotten the best of me, and I will take my chances. Would it be best to wait for the 100A or hurry and purchase the 100, hoping that I could sell it back?

BTW, when is the 100A coming out in the US, and how much is the list price? [Anyone pre-selling it yet]?

Granted, my best option would be to keep this camera because it (obviously) has more features and better image quality than any prosumer camera on the market. But should I wait for financing from friends or from a potential financer? hahaha!

Future questions will emerge from this eager wannabe-buyer, but I am just curious about what you guys think.

Best,
Mike

Re: DVX100 vs. DVX100A

Need! That is the key to your question!

If you truly desire to invest in the DVX100A without the hassle of selling your depreciated DVX100, then I suggest you wait, and rent a DVX100 as you need it. I've been told by my Panasonic dealer that the release date in the US is January.

Ever since my camcorder took a 30 minute swim in August, I've been doing just that; Renting. There's nothing wrong with renting. Just take it into account in your price. As for waiting this long, well, I've... (how should I say it?)... been rather indecisive? ::) (A few DVXusers here will get a chuckle at this!) But let's just say that now, my choice is definitely a DVX. I've waited this long, so I guess I could wait for another 2 short months for the DVX100A.

Re: DVX100 vs. DVX100A

I thought about renting a DVX, but really, I'd probably be better off buying the camera than expecting to be able to shoot within a few set dates in which rentals are charged ($175 per day!)

I just wish the DVX-100A info would be released so I knew exactly what was going on, as I wanted to start production in the next month. I can wait, but not past January.

Re: DVX100 vs. DVX100A

The projected release is January... But in all honesty, if you need it now, and you know the rental charges will break you in the long run because you'll be shooting often before the end of January, then buy it now.  But if you can wait...

Also, renting at $175US/day, I'd say you shoud shop around. I pay mine $145CDN/day, that's $110US.

Re: DVX100 vs. DVX100A

Michael,
Nobody yet knows for sure what 100A pricing will be. When it gets to the street, 100 prices will plumet. How low will they go?

Either way, you gotta wait.

Re: DVX100 vs. DVX100A

Now, will DVX100 prices plummet and have it still be on the market? Or will the prices plummet in the weeks or months before the 100A's release? I'm sure the new changes in the 100A will permit some more crisp and gorgeous images, but I'm working terribly low-budget here and could afford the 100, with a few mics and batteries, but not just the 100A cam. I'm very new to this business aspect of cameras, and some feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Re: DVX100 vs. DVX100A

The DVX100 is being discontinued, it will not be on the market after five or six weeks or so.

Will the prices plummet?

I remember back when the VX2000 came out, people vigorously defended the VX1000, saying the 2000 didn't offer much improvement, etc. People would say they'd buy a 1000 and save a few bucks instead of going for the 2000.

You don't hear that kind of talk anymore - you couldn't give away a VX1000 to some people (even though it was an absolutely brilliant, revolutionary camera!) The VX2000 is that much better.

Will the DVX100A prove to be that much better? I don't know. But I am VERY happy with the current DVX100. Either way you go you'll likely be happy, but if you decide to save a few bucks and get the current model, just get used to the idea that you may always wish you'd gotten the newer model, especially after we find out what goodies Panasonic has stuffed it with.

Re: DVX100 vs. DVX100A

VX1000 is the first digital camera I ever worked with on a broadcast project.. Man I remember how cool I thought it was back then.

Re: DVX100 vs. DVX100A

I just hope they leave the audio alone on the DVX100A. I've used the XL1, XL1s and the PD150 and the DVX100 has the best audio in its class. It would be ashame if these updates cause any diminished quality of the audio. I'm also curious to see how much of a tighter feel they were able to acomplish on the focus ring, should be interesting.

Re: DVX100 vs. DVX100A

I just purchased a DVX100, was this a dumb move considering the release of the 100A in January?

Re: DVX100 vs. DVX100A

Not necessarily! Do you have a need for it now? If yes, then it's not a bad move. Consider that the price of the DVX100A will be, from all accounts to date, $500 to $1000 more then the DVX100. Would it have been wise to wait if you could afford to wait? I think so, and this is what I'm doing.

Of course, opinions will vary, but it comes down to the initial question: Do you have a need for it now?

Re: DVX100 vs. DVX100A

I guess I would have to define 'need', yes i need it to start building my portfolio for college, etc., and no, I don't need it for financial reasons or otherwise. Thanks for your help. What are the differences of the 100 and 100A? Later.

Re: DVX100 vs. DVX100A

Was it a dumb move? I don't think so. Many people who have a DVX100 now don't even use all of the features that come with this great camera, and I'd expect the same with the DVX100A. If there isn't a feature you need on the new version, then you should be fine. I wouldn't sweat it unless you feel you need to have the latest and greatest. I'm worried that something may have changed with the new version and that the current crop of NLEs will need yet another update to handle the 24P. I hope not.

What kind of portfolio are you working on? Is this for a BA or MFA?

Re: DVX100 vs. DVX100A

I want to get into Tisch at NYU, so that'd be an MFA. Though, I'm not even going to be applying for the 2004 fall season, my grades aren't high enough, and my portfolio isn't developed, other than that I can't afford it. When I said I just purchased a DVX100, it was actually in the mail via UPS. About an hour ago during my lunch hour I went and opened the package that was just delivered. OH MY GOD. This thing is beautiful, absolutely beautiful. I love the weight of it. It's larger than I pictured in my head too. Right now I'm in class, so I'm just tweaking for the day to go by and to go home and use this puppy.

Re: DVX100 vs. DVX100A

If the ebay listing for the DVX100A posted under the "DVX100A for sale" is the correct price, I'll have to go with the DVX100, which is about $1200 cheaper from B&H and about $1500 cheaper at Buydig.

Any news on how much longer the 100 will be selling for? Will they pull it as soon as the 100A is officially released, or until the 100 models sell out?

Also, the Panasonic unidirectional mic that is sold separately with the DVX100 seems appealing...has anyone tried it? Or do you kids recommend a better mic?

Mike

Re: DVX100 vs. DVX100A

The one on eBay is someone who bought 2 in Japan and is selling them here. The price when they are officially released in mass here will be lower.

Re: DVX100 vs. DVX100A

Nobody knows what the price will be in America yet. I doubt Panasonic even knows what the price will be in America. It will be as high as they think they can possibly get for it. The DVX100 was originally announced with a $3495 MSRP, but once they saw the overwhelming demand and pre-orders, they raised it to $3795 MSRP BEFORE IT EVEN CAME OUT.

I am sure they'll wait as long as they can before announcing pricing. Although if the camera is officially announced at DV Expo, it'd be reasonable to assume they'll have the price sorted out by then.

The DVX100 is already discontinued, it will not be sold side-by-side with the DVX100A. The A is a replacement, not a complement. If you want a new "original" model, you will only have a month or two in which to get it.

Re: DVX100 vs. DVX100A

Hey folks.

I appreciate everyone's assistance in helping me decide which camera to purchase, the ups and the downs, and the greatness in between. Sadly, after writing a script and casting my film, my money has fallen through (loans, grants, credit cards -- everything), and will not be able to buy this camera or make my film. Water off the back (kinda).

But the daily check of replies has become ritualistic, and whenever or if I ever get the money to purchase a camera, this is the one.

Thanks again guys,
Mike

Re: DVX100 vs. DVX100A

This may be slightly irrevelant, but there a lot of people, especially in the skateboard industy that would kill for the original vx-1000 because of it's specific look as opposed to the vx-2000. There is a whole article I read on this. I can find a link if anyone wants it.
