DVX100 Picture Quality in "Similo"

lighting, different adapter, and my guess Color Correction.
It's the same adapter. The cinetek G35.

Can you expand a little on "lighting"? (Please excuse my ignorance here, but I'm looking for a slightly more in depth explanation!)

The specific shot I rippped has different lighting, but that's not what I meant- The difference in lighting between those 2 shots doesn't explain the improved quality of the edges, increased detail and crispness..etc

Also, watch the whole movie and you'll see what I mean, it just doesn't look like film from a DIVX100 camera, it looks like an expensive beta-cam movie.. how did he get it to look like that?

Thanks for any help :)

Different scene settings. The "bad" might have the detail set much lower... also it has to do with the adaptor and lenses, and the compression has to do with it too... you can't tell just by looking at it. A true test would be exact same scene settings, etc.

First, I gotta ask, messy edges? What do you mean by this? Second, I'm almost 100% positive that similo was shot on the FX1, as that is what most of Mcgegors more recent work has been on, I think I remember seeing that from his site as well. But please feel free to step in and let me know if I am mistaken.

What do you mean by scene settings- are there different settings on the DVX100E camera for quality of picture?

I don't suppose anyone knows what macgregor used? (equipment/lense..etc.)

By "messy edges", I mean they look like video. I can't explain it, it's a very slight colour-bleed (actually it looks more like abberation where the colours separate) barely visible to the naked eye but you notice it on a sub-conscious level as you're watching. Almost like the edges are not "clean" or "crisp". In fact, macgregor mentions it here: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=50979

I have read in other posts that Similo was shot on the DIVX100E, not his FX-1. He says he doesn't use the FX-1 much here http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=51957

I was about to get an FX-1e, but just saw Similo shot on DVX100e and have been stopped dead in tracks now!

Thanks for the continued help.. :)

Hi all.
To me, both clips have the same quality and definition.

The difference resides in the lighting, similo is done at dusk, with very sharp light in one side, and light reflection in the other side.

The other girl shot was done in cloudy day, so there is a lack in contrast.

Also, similo has been sharpened for the web compression, and the girl shot has not been sharpened. Try that on photosop or irfan view and see if you get your result.

Anyway i dont have the FX1 anymore, just the dvx and i will wait for the RED.

Hi,

Thanks for that info! Was Similo shot on the FX-1 or DVX100?

What post production- was it just Vegas' inbuilt cc plugins?

What compression and de-interlacing do you use..

There are scenes in the film which don't have as much contrast, but which do still look full and crisp, with movie-like edges (eg. 1:45). I hope I'm not being too annoying with the questions, so far Similo is the only film I've seen which comes close to the image quality I'm looking for.

Thanks for the help,

Matt

I dont understand what you say with movie like edges.

Have in mind that Similo was shot with a beta G35, maybe that is what you find interesting and different attached to a dvx100.

To my eyes Video edges bleed slightly (eg where red meets white) and, Movie edges don't and the overall feel is organic. I know it was shot with G35, it's not that.

What mode was it shot in? Which CC plugin did you use?

The compression looks quite lossless- I am interested to know what that was..

Thanks for the help :)

Underwater photography

Does this mean what I think it does? That the FX1E gave it 's life in the pursuit of art and suffered a drowning accident. If so, sorry.

Care to elaborate why you've chosen not to replace it? Ultimately, unhappy with it?

RED is a ways off, and when final operational cost is added up, I expect it to be way more expensive then we are being led to believe. I wish they were coming out with a $5,000 budget model that would just slaughter the Japanese competition but they don't seem to care about us truly low budget filmmakers.

You are right John.
The fact is that i´d rather prefer to go on renting cameras (like the XL H1 or HVX200) and wait for something better (as RED) than buying again a FX1.
FX1 or similar made sense to me 1 or 2 years ago. Not now when we are so close to the "new" hD cameras.

Stil video cameras only last 2 years in my hands before they died, or something a lot better comes in the market.

Also I will show the last footage that the Sony delivered once the technicians get the tape out of the camera...

MacGregor, I thought you sold the FX1 on these forums, which is why you don't have it anymore?

You say you will only rent the HD cameras, and wait for the RED; but didn't you purchase an XLH1?
