i use to have a panasonic dvc30... but it was stolen from me opening weekend at mount snow. my homeowners insurence will cover a new camera and i have a choice between cameras because the dvc30 is no longer made. i have narrowed my self down to the hv20 or dvx100..

dvx advantage - manual adjustments, handle with pause record button on top, many pro features, good low light, 24p, everything... but it is DV

hv20 advantage - compact, portable, 24p, hdv... but is consumer

i am going to be using the camera to film my friends and i skiing and making edits to post on the net, using the shots for different promotional stuff for different places, possibly making a full length ski film of all of us skiing, as well as, making edits to submit to companies for sponsorship or other purposes... which camera in the opinion of the people on this board should i go with?

DVX100B all the way. I'll organize my post as to why.

You said it yourself, with all the manual and pro feautres. It just helps so much to learn on that, and seeing as how you already had a DVC30, the HV20 would be a pretty hefty step back in terms of controlling your image.

24pA mode on the DVX is infinitely easier than the 24p mode on the HV20, since pulldown is a (somewhat) big hassle on the HV20.

Speaking of hassles in post, HDV is harder to edit than standard DV, for a couple of reasons, but mainly the amount of computer processing it takes to edit in Hi Def. or preview in realtime. Then again I don't know your computer set up.

Now there are some reasons one would THINK to get an HV20, because it's light and you'll be skiing. But the DVX is plenty light for that stuff. Hell, the DVX has been used in countless skate videos. Plus, the DVX has the handle on top which is ideal for skiing videos and what not.

You said you want videos on the web? DV requires a lot less compression for that, and it's you'll most likely be uploading SD videos to websites anyways.

And if you make DVD's 99% of people still don't watch HD DVDs, and are very content with watching SD DVDs.

Ultimately, it's the user WITH the camera, and the camera itself won't perform any magic, brilliant footage for you. The DVX is an excellent tool to learn how to hone your craft with all it's manual features, plus, you owned a DVC30.

I think you'll be really happy with a DVX.

well with that aside... Here is the big money question, whichcameracan I stick into the hands of my friends tell them to follow me with it and just press record? I need something that will work good in auto mode when ian infront of the camera or that I could make simple setup on for my friends to use. This was a breeze with the dvc30

ok thanks... how well does video come out in "auto" mode.. and what about dvx100 vs. sony fx7?

personally, i would avoid auto on any camera.

but i'd say go for the dvx100b. you dont seem to need HD at this moment.

for myself, when the camera is in my hands it will be in manual and i will adjust it as needed, but for when one of my friends is in control of the camera and i am the one being filmed, none of my friends could figure out manual on the dvc30 so i doubt they will be able to use the dvx so i will need to leave it on auto
