DVX100 live firewire switching

Greetings:

I'm considering the DVX100a for a little live studio, but there's one burning question on my mind. I would like to be able to run two cameras through a live firewire production switcher (eg MXProDV).

Can I run the firewire output of the cameras live through the switcher/fx generator and into my NLE? I don't want to have to be running tapes in the cameras all the time and if the firewire output is in real time and the camera won't "go to sleep" on me without a tape in the mechanism I'd be a happy camper.

From what I've gathered in the manual at panasonic's website and searching this and other forums I think this may be a "try and see" approach.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: DVX100 live firewire switching

no tape - no sleep.
you can also change this setting in one of the menus for when there is a tape present. one option is to have the camera power off and the other is to just "shut the heads down" (pause).

A belated thanks for the info. I still haven't gotten this project off the ground, so one more similar question: Is it also possible to use the composite out without a tape, and without the camera falling asleep?
