DVX100 is locking where no buttons work

My camera started 'locking up' where the power button and record button as well as any function buttons don't work. The viewfinder is still active but the settings on the screen are frozen as well as the audio bars etc.
One time I had the flashing 'no tape' sign when one was inserted, and this error occurred.
Another time it was in the middle of filming. I just pressed record and everything locked.
The only thing that helps is taking the battery off and powering up again.
Anyone heard of this error? Or what it can be related to? It's a dvx100bPAL

It's happened to me a few times. DVX100A. I think at times it has happened from going to record and back to pause to quick. But it usually seems related to dirty heads. It seems odd, but you can get the dirty head symbol flashing, viewfinder says it's recording, but there is no way to stop it without powering down. I hate cleaning tapes, but sometimes you don't have a choice. I have been curious too if others have seen this.
