DVX100 Green Screen Examples

National Lampoon recently launched a new program titled "Comedy Academy." The program is a collection of comedic short films, actor/actress/comedian interviews and mock junkets. Episode 2 was a 2-hour special showcasing the film "69, The Highway."

Below are examples of host reads from CA Episode 2. We did not have a set, so we opted to use a green screen. Our host was lit with 2-ARRI 650s and 1-ARRI 300. Our green screen was lit with 2-ARRI 1K fresnels. The scene was film with the Panasonic DVX100 set to 24pA (F6) and composited and edited with Apple's Final Cut Pro HD. Audio was gathered with 1-Azden WLX-Pro wireless lav.

I am by no means a green screen expert. In fact, this was my first time shooting and editing with a key.

Re: DVX100 Green Screen Examples

Hey Jonathan. That's cool work and funny too. I read somewere that DV did lousy greenscreen but that looks pretty damn good to me unless compression is hiding any edge artifacts on host. How does it look before compression? What type of green screen did you use? Was a portable kit, permanent install or...? anyway it looked real good.

Re: DVX100 Green Screen Examples

I think shooting the host reads in 24pA helped with the edges. I used FCPHD to remove the pulldown and get 24f/s and then used FCPHD's Chroma Key and Matte Choker. In the future, I htink I'm going to use Shake 3.5's Keylight as I hear it yield even better result.

I bought a Savage Port-A-Stand background support system and 9'x32-yard roll of Savage chroma key (green) paper. The support system is very portable, but the one would definately need a car for the roll of paper as it's quite large.

I'm glad you thought the wraps were funny. They were probably funny than the movie they spoke about.

Re: DVX100 Green Screen Examples

I'm hesitant to shoot any greenscreen material with DV. Even with good attempts by software creators, it isn't quite there. This is the nature of DV, you really cannot get around it.

If a project calls for greenscreen, I will shoot DVCPRO50, DBeta, BetaSP, film or I just won't do it.

I don't know man... I've seen some absolutely SUPERB results come from DV and high end software such as Ultimatte AdvantEdge. Couldn't tell that a key had been pulled at all.

Watch the trailer at http://www.ancanar.com

It was shot with a Canon XL1 and damn it looks good (save the low latitude of the XL1 but that's not the operators fault!)

I was able to see the first few seconds (darn dial-up!). It looked great to me! But mino covered my question, "how did it look before compression?"

Keep up the good work!

Perhaps in your past attempts, the lighting wasn't good. I've done blue screen with DVX and it worked great! Even lighting is the key. There's been enough examples on this forum to prove my point.

Yeah, I was wondering what that was shot on. That seems to be the best I've seen so far.
