DVX100 - DV out not working

I believe my DVX100 has a defective input/output module which houses the composite video/audio, the DV connector, and S-video ports. I have never been able to get my firewire (on Windows nor Mac) to acknowledge the hardware is out there via DV/Firewire connection. Tonight I also tried again the composite video/audio output straight to my TV and I cannot get a signal going out to the TV.

I really hope there's simply a setting in a menu that I'm missing... but I have a bad feeling this isn't working on the camera.

Was there ever a widespread known issue about this particular defect across lots of cameras by chance?

if you connect composite video/audio to the TV it should work regardless of the menu settings.
if it's broken just use another cheap dv camera to capture, I use a cheap dv cam as a capture deck.

Yes, sounds like for whatever reason, the board that controls input/output is dead

It MAY be something as simple as the cable has come unseated from the board (I've seen that happen on electronics occasionally) and it just needs to be reseated.

I remember reading awhile ago that there was a potential to short your firewire port if you connected it to the camera in some peticular order (something about the camera being on, then connecting, caused a current spike from the firewire bus) but I cannot for the life of me remember if it was a) confirmed and b) what order could potentially cause the issue

The burning out of the firewire port happens if you connect the PC end of the firewire cable last.

First off, this only happens if you have a cable with a 6-pin connector on the PC end and a 4-pin connector on the cam end. If the firewire port on your PC is 4-pin, then there's much less chance of blowing the firewire port.

If you do have the 6-pin/4-pin cable, then the safe thing to do is ALWAYS connect the PC end of the cable (6-pin) first, then connect the cam end (4-pin) to the camcorder. Of course, if both the PC and camcorder are turned OFF, then it doesn't matter which end you connect first. But safe practice is to always connect the PC end first.

too bad because the op probably already has a dead port....but still great info!
always good to refresh my memory.

i'm thinking its a loose cable. its rare for all of that to fail. If your brave, crack it open and check it out. Otherwise by a 100 dollar consumer cam to digitize with and keep the hours off your dvx100.
