Hello

Iam a DVX Shooter and I looking to bump my skillz up to HD level - what is the best way to learn and understand the technology and camera with out taking a class?

THX!

Hanging around here is an excellent start.

Rent an HD camera. There is no substitute for having it in your hands.

find someone that's a pro with hd. then ask them you'll help them in anyway to learn from them. you'll learn a ton, you will... eat for free on the set, make good connections, be a part of a project, sleep well (you'll be tired working 10+ hrs a day) and probably get a job gripping with them. have fun!

-Buy the camera or let someone who has it let your borrow it.

-Buy Barry's book and read through it.

-Hang out here and talk to people.

-Shoot. Shoot! SHOOT! The best way to get to know the camera is to keep playing with it. The more I shoot the better performance I tend to get. Keep trying different shooting situations, look at your stuff, see what you did wrong, then do it again and try to get a better result. It's really the best way to learn at the end of the day. A lot of things just come down to knowing how far you can push certain areas; things you learn from experience. What's the best exposure area in direct sunlight that'll let you maintain as much detail in the highs and the lows? How can you up the detail level without building too much noise? Which gammas work best in different situations? All of this is something you have to see with your own eyes since a lot of it is subjective. Just shoot.
