I just want to say yes after every take which is not the case right now.
"...and god created the tripod" > wise words from teacher at film school.
Light and with a good fluid head reliable for tele shots.... any1?
Thanks in advance.

I just got a Bogen 503 head, a set of Bogen 745mf carbon fiber legs, and a bag all for about $680. I love what I have -- the 503 is smooth and the legs are light. Your budget is higher than mine, so you could get something even better. I recommend carbon fiber legs whatever you do. You are smart not to skimp on the tripod. It really is part of the camera. The camera is the brain, the tripod is the body. Your investment will save you time and headaches later on.

While I appreciate that a set of carbon fiber sticks will save you a few pounds, I would go for something like a 515MVB / 503 combination. The ground level spreader is a great feature of the 515 and yet weighs in at only 7.7 lbs. Your $1000 budget will even leave a bit of room for a nice bag for the sticks and head.

$1,000 dollar budget for a tripod? Nice. My opinion...steer CLEAR of retail. Do your research. Find out about some brand names and models that you like. Then be a persistent EBAY watcher. Buying used, you can get sticks FAR better for a grand than what you can get going retail.

Two weeks ago, I picked up a Libec tripod, H35 head, T57 sticks (about $550.00 at EVS, $720.00 at Libec.com) on EBAY for $255.00. The tripod condition was in mint condition. It's super smooth, sturdy and beautiful.

Save your cash, spend your time. Go to EBAY.

I personally try to stay away from used tripods unless they're almost new.

If you're willing to spend up to 1000, then spend a couple hundred more and buy a 100mm ball Cartoni Focus. Believe me, it'll be worth it and you'll be thanking yourself for a long time. It has up to a 23 pound load capacity so you can use it when buy or rent a larger cams. I don't think there's anything out there that compares for the money, the only ones close are all 75mm balls.

thank you all, bogen sounds like the concesus. I'm not too keen on used > ebay as you never know conditions in which people used them, sand salt etc...
Thank you all and keep it coming. I'll be back here to check the votes ;)

Well, I can understand your fears with respect to buying used. Buying used can be a gamble. When you purchase new, there is virtually no gamble.

But for me, I think it's a gamble sometimes worth taking. Providing their ratings are high, they describe a "new" or "like-new" piece of equipment, I'm definitely going to consider the purchase. And, often save hundreds of dollars in the process.

Good luck with any avenue you choose to take!

Rick
PS I also have a Bogen/Manfrotto tripod and really dig it. It is well-made and very light. But, I have the 701rc head. Steer clear of it. The bolt for the quick release plate is in a funky spot. It takes one or two good turns to tighten the camera in place, but sometimes takes 10-15 turns to loosen it up enough to get it off the plate. So much for quick release...

Cartoni Focus is the only head in this price range worth buying. Nothing else even comes close.

The Focus is fantastic, but these two are just a bit cheaper and also perform very well:

Miller having the smoother head, Pro6 having the sturdier 2-stage tripod. I have the Pro6 legs under my Vinten Vision 3 head, and I have used the Miller DS10 head on some shoots. The miller tripod in this case is extremely fast setup with midlevel spreader, and is lightweight.

I guess sometimes I get weary of myself too

Dude, I sell every product mentioned on this page, the ones I suggested were just the cheapest for the best quality.

BWAHAHAHAHAHA Awesome.

I'll second Rush's suggestion of the Vinten Pro-6. It's what I'm using, and I love the thing. Hell sometimes I bring it to bed with me.

Strictly in a plutonic way, of course.

Rush, those two are 75mm, and while decent not really a comparison to the 100mm Focus in my opinion. I just think a couple hundred bucks buys a heck of lot more in the focus.

It wasn't so long ago you had to go into the 2 grad range to find a decent 100mm tripod. and the focus supports up to 23 pounds I believe. It is a new composite product, I guess time will tell if its worth it or not.

I believe you are absolutely correct icarus, the 100mm is a great advantage, and I have a Focus system in rental, absolutely terrific. What I was responding to was the $1000 mark of the thread, and just trying to give ondawan (who started the thread) as many options as possible around that $ amount.

TC, I hope you are using a tripod bag.
You know the old saying... 'no bag, no shag.' I don't want any little TC hi-hats running around.

...or do I?
