dvx tripod less than 1000$ suggestion any1?

I am at a similar crossroad. I have a 503 head and am looking at the following legs

525MVB / 3284 75mm Half Ball

Bogen 3445 Carbon

Bogen 3182

I had a stroke of luck, I went to the Bogen site and saw that they have a "New for Old Trade-In Program". I asked how much I could get a 525MVB with a trade in of my Bogen 3021 Pro and they gave me a price of $283.50 with the 3284 Half Ball Included.

WOW, I am excited about this especialy since I bought my 3021 on eBay for $84.00.

Bogen has always been a great and pro-active company. The first tripod that I owned myself was a Bogen. I had a head for video, and one for photo, and they shared the same sticks.

Hey Rush:

I drove up to Bogen this morning and I decided to go with the 755 MF3.

They offered me the 755B for $166 and the 755 MF3 for $304.50 on the trade in for my 3021. So now I have the combo of 755 MF3/503 and the 3127 Dollie.

Regards

Ray, nice work sir!

Rush, do you think carbon fiber sticks are worth the premium over aluminum?

I'm still debating tripod options . . .

It's all in what you use it for, and how much the weight reduction is worth to you. To a hiker, a couple ounces here and there make the difference between 10 miles a day and 20 miles a day. Fatigue is the key, and your level of tolerance. After a few miles, those extra pounds really make themselves known, unless you're a Mountain Marine. Most of us are not, and for me, getting a 44lb capacity tripod that is sturdy but 20% lighter than the Alum. counterpart is important for when I am walking from location to location without an assistant. If you mostly do studio work or even single-location outdoor work, invest in heavier duty aluminum. If you need to get around a lot, and have a couple more dollars, you'll feel the cash working for you every time you strap that tripod to your back.

Rush, as always, thanks for sharing your wisdom.

I'm planning to do a lot of traveling, and I'm sure that every ounce will be felt. Sounds like carbon fiber sticks are the way to go.

I would also add that carbon fibre sticks are quieter than aluminum. I hear a distinct ringing sound every time an XLR cable hits our 3191 tall sticks. The CF won't do that.

Sean, my pleasure sir, and best of luck.

Overland, very true, also evident in Aluminum vs CF boompoles.

I use the 503 head and have both the 3190/350MV (full legs) and 3185/350SHMV (baby legs) legs with ground spreader. They are solid. I'm looking at the their hi-hat and then i'll have a complete family :-)

I figured this was the most appropriate place to put this so...

What is the difference between the 501 and 503 head? How much weight it will hold?

What do you think of this package? What are the "Wilderness legs?"

I don't see much of a difference in these tripods but the prices vary a lot so it gets confusing. But I think all of them take the 501 head. A couple come with a bag which I would want. But what looks best on this page?

Thanks in advance & let me know if you think this should be a seperate thread,
Tony

Hi Tony, they hold the same capacity, 13lbs, but they handle it differently. The 501 is not spring loaded, and it has silicone cylinders for fluid-like feel; the 503 has spring return (a facet of Sachtler and other heads) and has real fluid-filled cylinders for a true fluid motion. They are both excellent starter heads and don't feel like the "Department store tripod".

That link went to 20 tripods, can you specify?

Wilderness legs are the 3221WN, designed by Bogen for rugged outdoor use in a lightweight package, primarily for photo apps, but adapted very well to video. Those are the most popular legs we have ever sold with the 501/503, followed by the 3046 studio legs.

I have the 503 and the Cartoni Focus and the Focus is definitely worth the extra dough. Try to test them out before if you can. Maybe the 503 is okay for your needs.

I picked up the 503 head from Rush. Great price and as always, great service. I have been very happy with the head from the quality to the smooth stop and starts. Having never used a head better than this, I can't imagine why paying more when it does everything I need. I have it on the 3046 sticks. They aren't light, but close down pretty tight and expands to a massive height. My tripod set up is one of the only things I have bought that I have no plans on upgrading as I am extremely happy with this package. I think Rush has this 3046 & 503 combo for like $550 - $650 (too lazy to look it up). I love this set up and am happy that I listened to Rush's advice and din't get the 501 I was planning on getting just to save $100.

If you can play with the different units before you buy that is the best bet, but here in Charlotte, NC I couldn't, so I just took advice of people on this board and have been very happy with my purchase.

Just got my Cartoni Focus from EVS (Ramzi was my knowledgable and excellent salesperson), and love it, love it, love it. I also have a Bogen 3046/503 combo, and the difference is the difference between my 8-year-old son's basketball team and the Spurs. Worth every...single...penny (and you have to have lots of them for this tripod, but the difference it makes in shots is astonishing, FWIW.)

Thank you for your business, sir! :) I will make sure to relay your accolades to Ramzi, he is a great coworker and a good friend, and is always appreciative of a pat on the back. The Focus is truly a responsive and smooth head, and Cartoni has definitely made it affordable for the quality it provides.

While I bought my DVX100B from Rush (coming Friday!) I did head on over to B&H to check out heads and sticks and cases and whatnot. And I am glad I did that.

It really does help to see and touch some things and the web will never get to that place, so as long as there ARE brick & mortar stores -- especially good ones -- I will also shop there.

Oddly enough I wound up with the 745 carbon fiber legs and the 503 head which I think will be more than fine for what I need. I nearly went with the 755 in aluminum but I knew that I'd forever wish I'd spent another $100 for the weight savings -- especially as I (and my back) get older! ;)
