DVX timecode problems while in 24pa

Hi all,

As of right now I'm using a Panasonic PV-GS15 camera as my deck and if anyone else using this camera could you please answer a question i have about it. I shot some 30fps footage and was able to capture it with no problem but then I shot some 24pa footage and when I went to go capture it it just sat there saying it was waiting for the timecode (this is FCP 4.5). So I was wondering if the timecode is somehow different between the two settings. And if not what could cause it to display that. Thanks inadvanced!

It's my understanding that most 24p capture problems have nothing to do with the deck and everything to do with the settings in your NLE for capture.

I usea canon palmcrdere that's broken (won't shoot). And capture fine.

This is because the DVX is really recording everything over the top of a 29.97/60i timeline using various telecinge pulldowns.

So it "should be" all about letting your NLE know what pulldown to remove when you capture and then playing on the right time line .... now here's the short answer.

OK so here are the proper settings for capturing 24PA.

You want to set the capture timecode to 29.97 NOT 23.98.

But then you want to check the box that says "remove advanced pulldown" or something like that.

It has to capture 29.97 and then remove the convert to pure 23.98.

then drag onto your 23.98 timeline and you should be good.

maybe you knew all that and it's something else, but if you're capturing 24pA in FCP for the first time then those are the common pitfalls.

but maybe you had your capture settings set to 23.98, and that won't work cuz it;s getting 29.97 even if you shot 24pA.

hope that's accurate / helps.

Most of the low end Panasonics do not pass the timecode on firewire which is why you're likely seeing that error. You'll need to use another camcorder (Sony) or your DVX100 or a deck.
You can set FCP prefs to non-controllable device but without timecode you can log and batch capture among other things.

hard to believe its crapier than my canon zr60 palmcorder.

amd 29.97 is 29.97

and firewire is firewire -- how can you have a firewire port that transfers data at speeds that are not up to firewire specs?

Are you saying it doesn't send a time code via firewire? Weird why bother having the port?

I dont get it. I usually use advanced pulldown removal preset in FCP5. I dont capture at 29.97 and then click remove advanced pulldown. I dont htink I do anyway.

I've read that. I know. It's just I've never had problems with play back when I do it my way. Am I missing something?

either it's an update to the software our you are having the wrong frames randomly pulled out.

Do you monitor on a NTSC external monitor? If so it might not be obvious because the interlaced frames wouldn't appear on the monitor.

But if you play on your computer monitor or progressive scan you might see some interlacing -- try frame by framing 5 - 10 frames and see.

thanks for the info man. I've hooked it all up I'll check it out. It's weird that FCP doesnt have a preset for this kind of thing considering so many people use the DVX.

Sorry, for not partisipating in the thread more...I was away.

I want to thank everyone for all their advice and will go double check everything. You guys rock!
