DVX stolen... Cheap alternative?

I came home last night and my house had been robbed. No insurance. Im not exactly a rich guy - just a school teacher living in Hong Kong, 26 years old. THe thing that annoys me is I lost my DVX. ITs gone. I only had time to make one film with it, and now its been stolen.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone could please suggest some alternatives to buy. Maybe something more compact but still good. I realise that nothing is going to have the beautiful 25p (im PAL) simulation that the DVX has. But im open to any suggestions if you have any. Im not going to blow as much as I did on the DVX, but maybe something around a 3rd or perhaps half the price.

Thanks guys:(

The AG-DVC30 May work for you. Sorry to hear that you got your DVX taken from you. I don't know what I'd do if someone took mine from me.

Best regards,

That sucks dude! sorry to hear bout your DVX i'd also suggest a second hand DVX if poss. I couldn't live without 25p though :crybaby:

A used Pana GS400 (lots of manual controls) or GS500 (same imagaing, but fewer manual controls). They have a PROCINEMA FRAME mode that does CINE gamma, true widescreen, and it's a progressive image (the chips aren't progressive, but it's the best-looking FRAME mode known to man, no resolution loss as compared to normal interlaced).

I 2nd the GS400, I had one before the XL2 and its image is awesome for the price. They sold like hotcakes on ebay a while ago because its such a good cam. I sold it for 200 more than I bought it for a year prior. Look to see if you can snatch one somewhere.

3rd on the GS400. Sounds like it'd be exactly what you're looking for.

And very sorry to hear about the break in. What else was taken?

rcbrown23.... Apart from the DVX I lost 3 other cameras. A classic Nikko SLR, a Sony 3CCD Camcorder, and a Digital Still camera.

This Pana GS400... can you attach a flare hood to that thing? Im guessing external mics have to be 1/8 jack?

Oh, and does anyone out there have any stills taken from a GS400? Or any footage? Thanks so much for the help, guys.

Mushyosh, make sure you circulate the serial numbers on the net, on all the forums. More than likely, the poor SOB that ends up buying the stuff won't know it's stolen. So do your best to advertise the serial numbers, so that the jerks that took your stuff won't have an easy life selling the gear. Sorry dude, that sucks...

Please note, these are subjective comments only, no technical measurements have been made.)
I have been driving the GS400 for about 14 months and have just got a DVX102be. My skill with the DVX is pretty marginal yet although the basic controls are similar to the GS400. (I can turn it on & off OK Ha Ha.) My guess is that the image quality of the 400 is about 90% of the DVX but maybe that margin might increase a bit when I come to grips with the DVX.
The stills on the GS400 are only just adaquate but very useful all the same. The 4 megapixel claim might be true technically but we we get better shots on our 1.2Mp Fuji. We have a dedicated still cam, a Panasonic Lumx 8 Mp DMC-FZ30 and those shots are wonderful. We bought that because of the poor quality stills on the GS400.
We are keeping our GS400 as a 2nd camera as there are plenty of instances where it's size and convenience makes it the better choice.
After the DVX you will find the zoom controls ghastly and the one ring which switches from iris to shutter to focus to zoom without any registration marks a bit of a pain. Also I note that whilst the DVX is 3 times the size it seems nicely balanced and my hands fall naturally in the right place wheras I seem to get my hands in the wrong place on the GS400. With my right hand firmly in the side strap I find it almost impossible to access vital controls.
I had expected a greater improvement in image quality in the DVX than the GS400 than I am presently getting but I am sure that I will do better. The picture on 400 is just a bit "harsher" the DVX seems a little more "mellow".
