DVX Still ROCKIN'

Just wanted to say that the DVX still kicks @#$ as a camera. I recently shot my first music video and people are very impressed. I used my DVX100A along with a homemade 35mm adapter.

The DVX is perhaps the best purchase I've every made.

The teasers of my short films also on the page below were shot on the same equipment.

Thanks!

The DVX does still rock. I just did a job for a major church for an international DVD release, and they wanted 4:3 60i, I used the DVX and it was excellent. And man, I forgot just how sensitive it is. I lit as normal, and actually had to put in the ND filter to keep the iris open!

that was a cool vid!! great look!. Care to share how you made the homemade 35mm? Not to mention good song!

I see great work with the DVX all the time. I was messing around the one I sold to my AD yesterday and forgot how small that thing is compared to the HVX.

Thanks!!!

Thanks!!!

Thanks for all the cool feedback. Yeah, the DVX sure is a winner!

For the guys who asked about my adapter, well, I'll give you a rough idea of how I did it. Ultimately, I think it's best to search around and find your own method. Mine is a hodge podge of what others have done.

1. First you need to attach a magnifying lens or lenses to your DVX. For instance, I use two 10x lens like THIS. These are the cheapies and you can buy professional quality lenses. I believe you need up to 20x, so two 10x works.

2. You need a step down ring from the 72mm macro lens to 52mm, like THIS. Because the 52mm side will not screw into the extension tube (next step), you'll need to glue it onto the extension tube with an appropriate glue.

3. Next, you'll need a macro extension tube that matches your type of lens, like THIS. I use Pentax lenses.

4. Then, you'll need to mount a ground glass like THIS inside the extension tube with something like THIS. Note: this is the most crucial step. You need to find the correct distance to position the ground glass inside the extension tube. This is determined by the type of lens you use (Pentax, Canon, Nikon, etc.). You'll need to search around the internet to find the distance. It's basically the distance the lens is from the negative on a camera body. I forget the technical name for it. So, you need to position the ground glass inside the extension tube at the perfect distance and use the sealer to hold it in place. Also, buy the finest grit ground glass and position the grit side toward the 35mm lens.

5. Finally, you'll need the appropriate lens, Pentax, Canon, Nikon, etc.. The beauty of the extension tube is that one end already has the lens mount built in, so you won't need to do anything else.

Here's a LINK to a really helpful guy with a bunch of stuff to buy if you want to skip steps.

Hope that helps. I messed up my first time and needed to re-purchase a couple of things. But the cool thing with the silicone sealant is that if you mess up, you can always remove it, and reposition the ground glass.

Also, please note that I am not in any way suggesting any of the Ebay items or sellers above. They are merely examples of what I used. I don't remember the actual sellers I went with. However, Optosigma does kick butt and I do recommend them. In fact, the guy I talked to on the phone knew all about what I was doing and which piece of glass I needed!

Let me know if you have any questions!

Peace....

Yeah, sure, thanks for asking about the lighting.... I kept it incredibly simple since I was the only "crew" present! Basically, you can see the two unadulterated 650 Arri fresnels. To light the performer from the front, I used two Chimeras a 500W household/tungsten bulb each. Depending on the shot, I tweaked the lights accordingly. And in one corner of the room, I had a Chinese lantern in the corner as a fill, probably with a 250W household. That's it....

Thanks! Very little color correction and I simply set the white balance to the 32K preset....

Settings??? Well, not much. Detail down -2 and Master Ped around -5. I used Norm matrix and B_Press Gamma, which I believe is the key!!!! I've tested gamma a TON and always end up going with B_Press - I love it.
