DVX still broken? ripoff artists?

As per request, EDIT:

summary: My DVX tipped over, landed on its side, and the drum was separated ("auto-off cylinder lock" error).

Specialized Communications fixed it at a fair rate.

Shortly thereafter, my firewire port wasn't working. I feared the worst (based on unbelievable past luck with other distributors), but spec-comm fixed the problem free of charge, as it was only a loose wire.

You can put the tape in any miniDV capable camera or deck and capture the footage. The 24PA isn't inherent to the playback device, just the recording device, NTSC DV is always NSTC DV. The footage captured will be identical as far as your NLE is concerned.

Thanks khmuse, I thought so, but the way things have been going, just wanted to make sure...

BTW, what do you think of this coincidence thing? That company claims to have run "diagnostics," and that thus, the firewire etc. should have been fine... Yet it won't work now...

So either my 1394 card or cable is screwed up (which again, just spontaneously happened), or the camera just happened to 'become damaged' after 1 hour of filming in my front yard. Some wierd synchronicities are working against me.

I second Sirius_Doggy's suggestion, try your camera on another computer to see if it is discovered. It is entirely possible that the repair effort impacted the 1394 interface on the camera, but there isn't really any practical way of knowing the cause. Hopefully, its just your cable.

Good luck!

ripoff artists, or lyers, or inept...?

ripoff artists, or lyers, or inept...?

as per request: EDIT:

With all the delicate circuitry within the camera, one of the wires came loose, but was easily fixed at no charge!

You are right about one thing, you can't "prove" what caused the damage, if it even exists. As a final step, you should connect your camera to a different computer and verify that it too can't detect its presence.

Don't completely discount static, it can damage things, but a camera sitting there with no other connections than the 1394 interface lacks a path for static discharge to cause a conducted event. I would certainly approach the service center and ask them to at least run their diagnostic routine again. If it still shows no problems, then you can challenge (very nicely) its validity. If it were a product of my company, at a minimum we wouldn't charge any additional labor to repair the "new" problem. If your really nice, you might even find that they will go ahead and cover the entire costs. I can tell you from experience that a really nice customer is more likely to get additional service that is well above and beyond what is covered by the service warranty policy. Certainly, going "postal" on them isn't going to gain you any sympathy.

Just a bit of advice to consider.

loose connection only --no charge!

loose connection only --no charge!

HEY! Update --I took my DVX back to Specialized Communications (www.spec-comm.com), and my paranoid delusions were unfounded --they fixed the firewire (was only a loose connection) free of charge, so all is well, and I can now actually CAPTURE my divine footage with the same camera!

This makes sense, as they were very professional and had a nice setup, so it only makes sense the problem was a fluke.

BTW, it appears they're getting the HVX in at what is so far, the cheapest rates I've seen anywhere!

I'd recommend checking them out if you're even thinking of getting the HVX. www.spec-comm.com

Can I recommend you edit your first messages, or delete them.

It was one of those things, no one was out to get anyone.

A good faith thing.

So now we can all start telling you NOT to do that? :)

Why put more hours on the DVX than you have to? Just about any cheapo MiniDV cam can be used for capturing.

I save my DVX firewire hookup for DV Rack. If I'm going to blow out the port, I'd rather it was done while doing something I had no choice in.

We are happy to know that everything has worked out for you and we appreciate your interest in the HVX200. It has always been and always will be our policy to provide excellent service to our customers.

Well, yes, I rarely do, usually using my spare mini-DV camera to capture... I just wanted the DVX fixed to have it fixed...

Also, I sometimes do need the DVX for analog capture ever since I switched away from Premiere (to Vegas; generic 1394 card)... Also use it occasionally to run image out to tape or VCR deck.
