DVX Sound Quality

I read a lot about the video quality of the DVX , but my concerns are about sound quality. I have a shotgun mike but I'm not sure what the sound quality and the profromance of the camera itself when it comes to sound. I understand when it comes to vidio the DVX is the bomb, but not enough information about the sound quality. Should I invest in a studio mike with a preamp and better sound card to acheive the quality sound let say for a music vedio. Any direction would be great.

Re: DVX Sound Quality

I think you'll find that the DVX has the best/cleanest sound of any camera anywhere near this price range. It's fantastic.

Re: DVX Sound Quality

Ya, its superiority in audio, actually outshines it superiority in picture.

An odd sentence, hope it makes sense.

Re: DVX Sound Quality

The question is always what limits the ability of the camera. I know that when using software you need to use the right software for the job. In the case of the video camera what is the right tool. I know that sound is one thing and video is another and having the twin mic on the DVX is just a consumer ad on. When it comes to perfect sound when making a video they becoma a seperate issue, each with their own problems and strengths. I just wanted to know if anyone is concerned about sound quality

Re: DVX Sound Quality

What are you trying to do? Mike a live stage performance? Mike a studio session? Is the sound you record meant to be the actual music track for a video for a band? Or are you just voicing a general concern about sound quality being "up to snuff" for presentation in a theatre? A true audiophile or sound person might have something specifically technical to say to you about this, but I think in general the folks here will have only praise for the sound quality. For what it's worth, I sometimes use my camera for the sole purpose of field recording, as opposed to using a DAT or nagra or what not. It's that good.

Re: DVX Sound Quality

Exactly. If you add a quality mic to the mix, your sound quality is going to amaze you.

Re: DVX Sound Quality

But only if placed/operated by someone who knows what they're doing... not to be disagreeable, but strapping an MKH416 onto the camera is likely going to result in horrible audio... whereas oleg with a $39 microphone in his possession could deliver much more usable audio, I'm sure.

Just like with the camera, equipment is only part of the equation, and probably not the most important part. How you use it (the knowledge and experience of the sound operator) is going to deliver more useful improvements in the audio than just upgrading to better equipment. All pro's use the best equipment they can get, of course -- but great equipment in the hands of an amateur will yield amateurish results. You gotta have the knowledge and the skills too.

Re: DVX Sound Quality

For a music video you need to dub the audio. The DVX mic preamps are the best of the little miniDV cameras.... it'll provide very good sound clean 48k sample rate quality provided as Barry stated, you know how to get good sound.
