DVX Sony Vegas capturing problems

I've searched and searched on the internet for the past couple hours and I haven't been able to find any solution to my problem.

I just got a Panasonic DVX100a; I've had experience shooting and using a DVX100b, and I have had a lot of experience capturing footage from other miniDV cameras--such as the Canon HV30.

My problem is that whenever I plugged my DVX100 into my computer using FireWire, the computer detected it, the generic drivers installed perfectly, and in my device manager it shows up as being a "Panasonic DV device", BUT Sony Vegas Pro 9.0 can't detect it. The FireWire port works because the computer detected it and installed the drivers, but Vegas can't detect it and won't allow me to capture any footage from it.

Just to go through the list of obvious stuff: I've capture footage from another camera with this computer, using this same FireWire cable, using this same version of Vegas and it worked fine; I have the camera switched over to the vcr setting; and I've played around with all of the video setting within Vegas to my heart's content and I still yield no positive results.
 
UPDATE: Going into the preferences of Vegas and selecting "Use external capture device" allows me to use some different capturing suite. This one works. It detects my camera and allows me to capture footage. But it drops frames like a mother ****er, and also trying to import the footage into my timeline causes Vegas to crash every single time.

I know that this camera is able to interface with my computer and capture footage, but how do I get Vegas' in-house capturing suite to recognize it?
 
Oh man. I feel really ridiculous. I figured out the problem finally. Upon reinstalling Vegas and defaulting all of the setting, when I tried to go in and capture footage, the dialogue box(which wasn't popping up before since I'd at some point clicked for it to not pop up anymore) told me that only High Definition footage can be captured with the in-house capturing suite(since, I guess, Vegas Pro 9 is primarily an HD environment). For any standard DV footage, I have to use that external capturing suite. I guess this explains everything, but now I still have the problem of Vegas crashing whenever I try to import the footage into the timeline.

I wasn't even thinking about the fact that Vegas Pro is set up for HD editing. I've been using a Canon HV30 all this time so it wasn't a problem.

Would anyone suggest me switching to a different version of Vegas more suited to standard DV, or should Vegas Pro 9 continue to work just fine for me?
 
You should definitely be able to capture standard DV within Vegas Pro 9. I have Vegas Pro 10 and I have no problem. It is certainly not HD only! I'm not in front of my editing computer right now but when I am I'll see if I can find a solution to your problem. There's probably a check-box or something in project preferences, you might like to have a look around yourself...

EDIT...

I use the external capture device in Sony Vegas, though I didn't realise it! It's probably the default option for DV capture. It works fine for me. I get dropped frames once in a blue moon, I'm afraid I don't know what's causing yours. Make sure nothing is running in the background (virus protection updates for example).
