DVX Short titled "Graphic"

I'm just sharing a short i made with my friends and the DVX100a. I used the stock lens, natural lighting and lav mics. We shot it over 3 days in santa barbara and Los angeles. Edited with FCP 5.

One of the many drawbacks you'll notice is that some of the shots are blown out. This was our first time and we made some mistakes.

I come on here a lot to see what others are making, HVX news, and tips, so it's nice to finally contribute something.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Great film, and footage. Acting was good, girl was beautiful =).

I live in the valley, you guys ever down here, let me know, maybe I can help out with a location or something.

That girl is a good actor. Everything she said felt natural and thats got a lot to do with the dialogue shes given in the first place.

The compression sucks. Seriously consider another output as I just simply found it hard to watch.

Was a little predictable. Thats not always a bad thing from an audience perspective. People are creatures of habit, and like to be right.

There was a lot of sitting. Please do another output and I will happily watch is again to give more detail.

You have to click on the middle of the video box... in some cases you have to click on it twice. It should start up.

As for the compression... it's very hard to present such a long a piece of video on the web. This was the best I could dol

FilmMakerr - We all live in the Burbank-Hollywood area so we're all in the same neighborhood. We have another project we're doing in March with the HVX200 so we should connect up.

there is nothing to click on, its just a black empty space. no box, or anything to click on.

I've tested it on IE and Safari. It's flash video... it's supposed to be the most universal. Try a different browser if you have one. I'll try to make available a quicktime file as a download

i have flash, i a ma youtube nutcase.

everything there works but on this page nothing loads, i get all the beautiful text and layout design, but no box to click on or anything

somethings not right.

doesnt even see the window in firefox for me, and in internet explore, the box shows, but n ovideo loads.

i tried rebooting and so on, still not seeing it. Are yo usure everything is done correctly? I asssume it was since some have already seen it but im not having that luxury.

no problems with watching the video for me. You should put up a better quality video, the compression really does make it harder to watch. I want to see the quality of the images along with the story you offer.

Kept my attention for most of it, which is hard for most of the video's on this board to do. I think it was mostly because the acting was strong enough to keep me interested. The camera work was simple enough to not distract the viewer from the story. I was expecting more of a shocker towards the end, you definatly led me to believe there was going to be something more. But no complaints, it was a very well done short, and i would be proud to have this under the belt.

wow, that was amazing.

absolutely loved it

great acting.

i must know what you used for audio, what mics were used.. so on, lighting?

your color correction looked pretty extensive? What did you do?

We used remote mics the whole time to keep the audio consistent. Also remote mics are great because you can put your actors in real settings and hide the camera somewhere (which is what we did) Then you can have lots of free extras and things moving in the foreground and background. We were pretty bold in some locations because in order to shoot in the LA train station I had to tell the head of security that I was shooting a documentary on trains.

We basically used all natural light, but I was reminded by one of my friends that we did use a single light in the "boob grabbing" scene.

I used Magic Bullett to do the color correction... And I would just apply multiple filters and different styles until i was happy with the look. I think i went too far with some the CC, but I was learning.

here is a link to some behind the scenes pictures....

We rehearsed this thing for about 3 months so the actors knew the script backwards and forewards. Then I just put them in front of the camera and they nailed it most of the time. I got very lucky because they were all good actors.

It's hard to post good quality video when the movie is so long. I could post a couple minutes so you could get the idea....

i just found that your audio is really what made it as cinematic as it was

please provide what you used. i would love to investigate.

Really pro. Liked your composition and colors.

You had some uber-sound there. You said you used lav mics? Could you tell in detail what you used to get your sound?

to be honest, ive seen dvx footage thats blown out and looked like ****, but i completely ignored it here cause it just worked with it..... not sure how you achieved that u little son of a gun

There is not much to say that hasen't already been said. I really enjoyed it. You should give yourself more credit. I do think the CC was a little heavy in spots, and next time instead of using the Magic Bullet presets, start with one and tweek it to make it your own. I thought your audio sounded great. I noticed that it was overmodulating, but I think that probably came from the compression. I would like to see a QT version with better compression to see if that is actually the case. Great job.
