DVX picture has vertical lines?

I just made a DVD, but there seems to be vertical lines in certain shots. Does anyone know why? When this disc plays on a regular TV the vertical lines don't show, but if it's shown on a 16:9 TV (I cropped it with sorenson to work as 16:9 disc), it shows the vertical lines. These vertical lines also show up on my laptop. Is this an Avid problem, or a camera problem?

Notice the vertical lines/jagged edges in on the red seats. The jagged edges are more prominent on a television screen.

Moderator: if you think this should be in the screen caps section please feel free to move it there. Thanks, I don't know how to move it there.

That looks like typical DV compression artifacts on red colors. You might want to try shooting with your chroma phase set to -4. I have found that to be the correct setting for red when shooting a test chart on a waveform/vectorscope.

One more PQ question, will setting the chroma phase to -4 help horizontal lines too?

In my short film, I have credits scrolling, with a picture on the side (picture in picture) and I notice that the small picture has prominent horizontal lines across it - jagged edges. So the picture looks distored as if they were layered. I would havec thought the picture would be sharper because it's smaller, but it's not (somewhat jittery looking). Any help there?

You are seeing the result of fine detail that can't be resolved by a single line when displayed on an interlace monitor. This is why the camera allows for a setting for THICK or THIN for horizontal detail. The THICK removes this artifact when playing back, but does take away some of the finer detail.

Smaller and thinner does not always mean better when showing work on an interlace monitor -same goes for colors.
