anyone have experience shooting exterior winter?
I am wondering how this baby deals with the cold...

I'm talking 12 hour days out in the cold with no chance to get it warmed up between set ups...

Re: DVX outside in the winter..?

Camera...no problem

Tape...no problem

Battery...keep em warm

ps, use a chamois eyepiece cover...

Re: DVX outside in the winter..?

I've had bad experience shooting in the cold, without warming the camera and tapes up.

A full-day shoot in an unheated garage, -20C outside, and the tape was ridden with dropouts. I got half of one shot that was usable.

Definitely make sure you warm this puppy up ever so often - there was nothing worse than knowing we had to completely re-shoot a sequence that already wasn't much fun, because it was so cold.

Re: DVX outside in the winter..?

I experienced condensation once last winter in Paris. but the fault was my own....I shifted the camera from warm room temp to cold temp outside (-5) suddenly. However I remained outside throughout the day...almost ...without a single dropout

Re: DVX outside in the winter..?

Well, this day was out in the cold for the entire day. The very beginning of our footage was fine - about twenty minutes in to the shoot was when we started getting the problems, and the problems were there for the rest of what we shot that day.

When we re-shot, we made sure every 45 minutes to go inside for 15 minutes, to warm up the camera - that day's footage was fine...

Re: DVX outside in the winter..?

Search the Panasonic site, they had a press release about someone who took his DVX up the Alps or Everest or someplace... it's been a couple of years since I saw the article, it was one of the first articles on the Panasonic DVX site.

Re: DVX outside in the winter..?

im new to this forum, been reading it forever..but never posted

i have a firsthand, exact knowledge of the dvx100a

i spend over 180 days a winter shooting for some ski companies, producing independent, x games style skiing films. I run two 100a's and spend over 8 hrs a day non stop in below freezing conditions

never once have I had an issue with cold weather operation (knock on wood). Both cameras have been reliable for me, never any lost footage or odd function. I keep the camera in a Lowe Pro backpack two hours after bringing it in for the day, and have never had any condensation issues with the camera. Excellent in cold weather, even better then my xl1s (had major lens issues in cold weather with that camera...bad lens tracking blur below 20f)

Re: DVX outside in the winter..?

what do you mean by this? auto focus servo was slow and sluggish..?
I intend to stay manual for focus and zoom...

Re: DVX outside in the winter..?

Could be some kind of improvment in the 100a... more rugged perhaps than the 100?

Re: DVX outside in the winter..?

the lens tracking remark was toward the xl1s...i had two, and each camera below like 20f after a few hours would have major blur if you moved the lens even a tiny bit...i think it was an issue in the OIS, but i really couldnt tell...but it was consistent straight outve the box..so i discontinued using the xl
