Dvx or Fx1 again?

I recently purchased the adobe video collection in preparation for my purchase of a Dvx100a. I have been coveting this camcorder since the dvx100 first came out. I am planning on shooting and marketing some outdoor DVDs as well as attempting a short and feature with my adult children. I have read the tests biased and unbiased and am still struggling with the choices. I know HD iis going to be all the rage so it makes this decision tougher. I love what I've seen of the Dvx here for the last year or so. I have seen a little footage of the Fx1 and it looks good as well.
I have some doubts about the Fx1, if it is the latest and greatest where are all the people unloading the Dvx's ? I am planning on making my purchase in two weeks probably from EVS since they sponsor the site here. I have had camcorders for years but I will have to learn the ins and outs of whatever camcorder I choose. This makes me lean to the one that offers a rebate and Barry's book(Dvx). If I were to purchase the Fx1 I would have an additional expense of the editing plugin for Premiere. If I don't that money could go towards the anamorphic adapter or lights etc. The Fx1 offers HD(I have a 65" bigscreen HD compatable) so the HD does have some appeal
over the DVX but I am stuck totally. I have a pentium 3.2 ghz processor with a firewire port and an X800xt video card and 21inch flatscreen monitor. It has a 160 gig harddrive and I am planning to purchase an external firewire harddrive as well. I think I am set computer wise for either camcorder. What am I missing or not considering? Stuck in Missouri?

Re: Dvx or Fx1 again?

Whether HD will be "all the rage" remains to be seen. Even now, 7 years after HDTV was first offered to the American public, only 7% of American households have some sort of HDTV (and many of those are HD-"ready", but aren't actually equipped to receive an HD signal!)

So, HD may or may not be all the rage, however, there are amny of us who think HDV will most definitely not be all the rage. HDV is a way to record high-def, but there are better ways (and Panasonic will release a camera that employs one of those better ways, but it's at least two months, and maybe as much as 10 months away!)

So, yes, the question you really need to answer is: HD? Or film-look SD? Because right now you can't have film-look HD, that's not among the options available to you. So decide which is more important, and decide how important it is to you to get something *now*... if you have a business purpose for it, get it now and put it to work. If it's strictly for personal use, and HD is important to you, Jan's promising us a product that will (if I remember the quote correctly) "blow HDV away". But it may be quite a wait.

So you can have film-looking standard-def, with 7 gamma curves, 24p, 30p and 60i, the best audio of any prosumer camera, better low light performance, better latitude, the book/dvd, the rebate, magic bullet for editors, and this community to back you up... but it's only standard-def. Or you can go for high-def, which will mean giving up all those other features but getting startlingly sharp high-def pictures that look like very sharp, very high-res video.

Or, if you can wait, you'll get the best of both worlds -- high-def 24P...

Re: Dvx or Fx1 again?

Thanks for the reply Barry. I am not a professional although at my age (50) I am thinking of using it along with a fishing guide business to supplement my retirement income or perhaps get me out of my current job early. I think you make a great point about the features on the Dvx compared to the Fx1. I want to enjoy the camera now even though I could wait. I think me and the Dvx will be hooking up no later than March 15th this year. You have confirmed what I have suspected. So its going to be a Dvx! I will have a lot of questions in a couple of weeks and I look forward to my first baby steps with the knew toy. EVS will get my business. Thanks to Dvx user for all the great information and screen grabs.

Re: Dvx or Fx1 again?

good choice dude. You can buy all kinds of goodies for your DVX and put it to good use right now, instead of blowing your wad on a camera that you can't really use to it's full potential, yet. i had the same questions as you did, and I just can't justify all the other "hidden costs" that Hd has right now. You may think you have everything you need for Hd, but guess what, something will come along to bite you in the A**! I wouldn't jump on that Sony right now.First run of a new format,no thanks.

Re: Dvx or Fx1 again?

We still sell the DVX ten to one ahead of any other camera, it is such a proven contender, and the picture quality is incredible. One of our coworkers just received his first advance from investors to shoot a full length film, based on scenes he shot with that camera. They will most probably just add to those scenes and burn the whole thing to film. ;D
