DVX on a 16:9 HD set / Barrys book clarification

I'm a little green in this area: when someone views my DVX SD footage on a 16:9 HD set, is the result the same as if it was up-rezed? I mean, do these HD sets "blow up" footage that they recognize as non-HD, so that they will fill up the screen?

And related to that: I want to make one DVD that will play on old 4:3 Zeniths as well as my friends widescreen set. I read in Barrys book that if you shoot your footage in squeeze mode and author it to a 16:9 DVD-then a person who watches the disc on a regular set will see black lines on the top and bottom.

And a person watching the same disc on a WS display: it will it fill completely with no bars?

Have I got this right? Has anyone tried this and how has it looked? Thanks!

Yes - it will fill the screen - NO it is not up-rezzing the footage. Samsung and a few other manufacturers do make DVD players with scalers built in that do scale the footage up to 720 or 1080.... but most simply stretch the image to fill

Yes - you are correct. Shoot squeeze and your DVD will fill the screen on a 16:9 TV and show letterbox bars at the top and bottom on a 4:3 TV.
