What kind of insurance do you guys have for your DVX and other equipment. I'm looking into buying insruance for all my gear which is not business related but I have no idea which company could provide me with a reasonable insurance against damage, theft, etc. Any ideas??

Re: DVX Insurance

State Farm.
I have $20,000 in equipment coverage with no deductable and 1,000,000 in liability. All for $54 per month.
You can get a $1000 deductable and say 10 bucks a month.

They never asked for any business paperwork or anything so you can always just say you do side stuff as a hobby.

Re: DVX Insurance

Not sure, I have a house and we are covered (house stuff) under American Family. But they dont have personal stuff insurance. They suggested State Farm.

I just called and agent and said I have a small video prod. bus. and needed to insure my equipment and some liability.
Got my quote as stated above.

It covers my equipment everywhere under any condition.
Only thing it doesnt cover is if it just dies. (i.e. warranty stuff) I guess I'll just have to drop it a few times to try and get it to work after my warranty is up. ;) just kidding.

Re: DVX Insurance

Anyone know where to go for coverage for equipment if you're going out of the country?

Re: DVX Insurance

I am with Farmers Insurance. I need to talk to my agent and see what's up my renters insurance at this point, with all my new gear. I don't even know if my renters insurance is that robust.

At claim time they are going to ask lots of questions about business use, and when it becomes obvious (from tax returns, etc.) that you are in business, they can refuse the claim and just refund your premiums.

If you're not in business, add a list of scheduled equipment to your homeowners insurance. If you are in business, then getting a business policy is the safest way to cover yourself. You'll get liability insurance with it, so when someone trips over a cord you won't lose your house in the lawsuit...

Ran into this problem last month. No business policy covers you outside the U.S. without getting a separate policy. Unfortunately, these ran $2,500 and I only needed it for a month.

If you are travelling on a personal vacation out of the country, your homeowners policy may cover you, even if the equipment is owned in the business, provided you are not conducting business on that trip.

Join an association, as they get great rates on business insurance, which covers liability as well as the equipment. WEVA for instance is about 1/2 the price of getting it direct from the same company...

Re: DVX Insurance

Mitch thanks a lot. How much does the insurance cost from WEVA. I know it might differ, but when you're saying it's half would it be i.e $250 vs $500 insurance from State Farm???

Re: DVX Insurance

Contact Peter Distefano at pdistefano@sbcglobal.net. He is a photographer in the SF Bay Area who is also an insurance agent. He quoted me a $750 yearly premium for about $20,000 worth of professional gear. The coverage is worldwide.

Re: DVX Insurance

24Peter I checked safeware but do they also cover dvx?? I read on their page that it is computer insurance..sorry just little confused here.

Re: DVX Insurance

I emailed Safeware a couple of weeks ago and they told me that they only insure computer equipment. Is it a matter of insuring your computers and adding the camera to the policy?

As I warned users here before, they WILL check for business use at claim time. I personally wouldn't do it that way. I'm insuring 5 times that much stuff for only 3 times that price and it's a business policy with liability coverage as well...

I was with a well know company with a business policy. When I joined WEVA (I write for their magazine), I cancelled the policy because WEVA got me coverage for 1/2 that amount... the interesting part... it turned out to be the same company as I had before. Right now, $100,000 of coverage is around $1,600/year. But, this included liability insurance, not just equipment coverage.

http://www.buellinsurance.com/

I get a rate that is through a negotiated WEVA rate. The coverage is very, very substantial and my impression is that they are very legit. I did not shop around tho.

coverage includes premises, video equipmt, computer equipment, production accidents, travel.-sorry sketchy details, but I don't have it memorized-it is very extensive.

For out of country travel, you need a separate "marine policy."

For US customers, Canada is included, yeah!

Re: DVX Insurance

I have AAA renter's insurance and they charge $16/yr per $1000 for scheduled equipment ($160/yr for $10k). By scheduling equipment you are covered for lost, dropped in water, stupid mistakes with equipment, etc...
