dvx image width

Okay, bear with me. I understand the dvx doesn't have true 16:9 but I've also heard the lens allows you a wider angle than the xl2. Does this mean if you shoot 4:3 with the letterbox you're seeing a similar amount of visual information? I think this is a long shot, but I'm trying to think of everything.

Re: dvx image width

You'll still have a 720x480 picture. That won't change. However, you're going to be able to see a wider angle within that frame. If that makes sense.

Re: dvx image width

You'll see a similar amount of information, yes. However your video will a) be 4:3 shaped instead of 16:9 shaped, and b) only use 75% of the CCD, vs. the XL2's 100%*

Yes you would actually be seeing basically the same image. No it won't be "the same"... it won't be properly displayable on a 16:9 television, and it won't be nearly as high-res.

*(of the 1/3.3" 16:9 subset of the 1/3" 4:3 CCD, that is).

Re: dvx image width

So even though your eye would see the same relative image, the resolution would be less when transferred to film?

Re: dvx image width

The resolution would be less in the camera, less on a television, less on the computer screen, less on film, less everywhere.

The XL2, in 16:9 mode, uses the full surface of the CCD.

The DVX in letterbox mode uses an area equivalent to 75% of the CCD. Less pixels to go around = less resolution.
