DVX footage...

Hello all,
I would just like to say that i've been visiting this forum and a few days ago i converted from a vx2000 user to the awesome dvx100. This is my first footage shot at work. I was just messing around with the different lighting conditions. I look forward to learning alot from this forum. I shot this using 24p and edited in vegas 4.0e. Shutter speed varies from 1/46 to 1/24 to 1/60. Everything else was lefted alone. When i have more time i will test all the settings. Can some one please tell me which is the best settings for getting the image to look more like film based on experience. Thank you for your time. Please check out my test footage and give me an honest opinion.

Re: DVX footage...

Sid,

I am sure the mayority of the people in this forum knows how the DVX works in standard settings and how standard footage looks like  ;) I wish I knew what the footage was all about before I downloaded the whole enchilada. In the other hand if you want candid and honest comments and opinions from the guys here try to compose let say 10-15 seconds of good edited and meaningful footage that contains some sort of escence... my two cents...

Re: DVX footage...

Hope this will help :
- Use tripod, they was invented for reason.
- 24p is not a magic, it is requer additional work, like setup framing, lighting ... etc
- If soundtrack was main line in your short, add some shots to tieup with california location, currently it may be shot any were else, include russia.
- Make shots with people shorter, more like snapshots.
- Change name titles, make them bigger and brite.
- Try to sinchronize motion with sound.
- Ask some one for help to hold reflector and point additional light on faces, with good angle you will make them more intresting.
- Last don't be upset with negative responds to your test video, it is one way to learn.
Again this is all just a sugetions.

Moscow and airplane brought me here.

Re: DVX footage...

I love the Russian sense of humor! ;D I miss my russian Physics professor from my college days!

Re: DVX footage...

LOL

I almost fell out when I read that. So, the Russians have as much sarcasm as we do. He'll fit in nicely around here!

Re: DVX footage...

Stuff isn't too bad. From what i gather you didn't wanna set stuff up and film... just test basic camera settings. I can tell by how you composed shots that you do know what you're doing...

cine-like gamma definitely needs to be turned on to get the film look...

desaturating the picture just a tad also helps give the film look. Hope this helps :)

Thank's to all.
I think post took different turn, some where :)

Re: DVX footage...

hahahha i'm so sorry you guys had to download a 20meg file for that footage. I just got the dvx and was excited. I thought hey let's see how this camera handles very low light (inside the garage, very dim) and it did pretty good. The whole footage was shot with different shutter speeds and setting just to see the difference. I was on my comp and wanted to see how vegas video would handle with the dvx and it was the only footage i had. I can tell you this, even though i was just shooting randomly i like the look of the dvx way better than the vx2000! I love this thing! I think i will buy the 100a in a few months. I promise my next footage will be of something useful. You guys crack me up though.

Re: DVX footage...

You really willing to spend more money on the A?

There haven't been all that many changes between the two. If you already have the original, I dunno if it'd be worth it to go for the upgrade.

I mean, the reason they didn't change the model number was because the A is only more of a varient. Might be better to wait for the next model upgrade...

Re: DVX footage...

hmm... i thought they changed the prism or something like that. Didn't it also have AF in 24p now? Dunno, maybe you're right. I'll do a little more research on it. Thanks for the understanding, haha. I wish i have a little more time to play with my dvx. Hopefully this weekend. Then you guys will see more pointless footage! lol, just kidding. Have a great day everyone.

Re: DVX footage...

..its like the difference between the standard car model and the "LS" version.. adds little touches, but its the same thing.

the "a" has "focus assist" which takes a while to auto focus in progressive modes. and isnt suitable for actuall usage.. just does the focusing for you if you let it sit long enough.. (but who uses AF anyway)
it is supposed to have a different lense and prism for better color reproduction, and better dsp as well , but can anyone tell the difference.. well.. no. if you can afford to sell at a loss and get the "a" more powaz to ya though. i would do it just for the heck of it if i wasnt losing alot of money from the dvx100 wich is really just as good.

Re: DVX footage...

Yeah, I agree fully. Basically, if you can get the A without losing money at ALL, well then why *not* go for it? but I wouldn't spend any more money on it, it's really not that much different.

I'll bet anyone anything (well, not REALLY bet, but you all know what I mean) that if you show someone footage from either camera, NOBODY would be able to tell if it was shot with the A or the original. A good shot is a good shot, and you only get good shots by having skills (or being really really lucky). Either camera will be equal in the end.
