DVX footage to look like Super 8

Doesn't look like super 8 to me. The grain dust and scratches are a nice touch, but it feels like it's sitting on top of video footage and not part of it.

I think more color changes are in order to get what you're after. Do you have super 8 footage as reference to compare it to?

I agree that it looks like the grain isn't embedded. I think that the altering of the contrast will help.

I know it doesn't look like kodachrome, but i think it is very comparable to vision2 200t. I shot a music video last week on that wonder filmstock and i couldn't believe how great the colors where.

But the kodachrome look is what most people associate with super 8 so I think that's what you should be going for. This is an image/narrative issue really and if you want people to think of 8mm film, you need to reference what most people think of when they see it.

Not the latest and greatest, but the oldy and not so goody.

I liked the title super at the end.

About it looking like super 8...well no. But keep trying.

There are a few decent and free three strip technicolor plugins that are a decent place to start. I've gotten okay results with them.

Check stibbs free FCP plugin's for links. Sorry I'm too lazy to hunt it down myself.

dasonras,
how did you do those little flecks and such running across the screen. I am emulated old messed up film on a project I am working on and have only figured out how to do scratches. Is that in Magic Bullet?
Thanks.

it's real simple...you'll laugh

The clip above i created using Vegas 6... i was just experimenting with an idea. Therefore, the color isn't corrected to look like film. I re-did this clip at work on Avid and got the colors much better... sorry i can't share that one yet, no internet connection.

Anyways, to get the black artifacts, i had some raw 16mm footage from a project i did a few weeks ago. I have 45 seconds of leader with artifacts. I imported the leader footage, boosted the contrast, then inverted the colors on a greyscale. Next, i overlayed this image onto the real video track (Vegas). In avid i played around with the superimpose effect. I added some crappy grain as well.

I think if i play around with it, i'll get it real close on avid. This is sort of an archaic way to do it, but hey at least the render time is a lot shorter! I am not a fan of magic bullet... not a great value.
