DVX Feature

Putting the soundtrack underneath but "The New Romans of Florence" is nearly completed. It is feature and I'll be posting this on some other boards to get some input. Thank God for the digital age or producing your own film would not be possible. And I'd like to thank this forum for advice and help.

Take a look if you have the opportunity.

Off to festivals.

Re: DVX Feature

Had a look at your trailer. To me, it´s way too long. It kills my interest in seeing it, unfortunately. I would advice you to re-edit the trailer to achieve a bigger audience. Thats my thought. The poster looked very nice, nicely lit. Missed that "roughness", the harsh lighting, in the trailer though. Anyway, good luck on your way around.

Re: DVX Feature

Congrats on your film - it's inspiring to see awesome looking films being shot with the dvx.

I am gearing up to shoot a feature at the end of this summer. My plan is to go black+white with all our footage. Your black+white clips looked great to me. Can you pass on any tips or advice on lighting and camera settings - did you play with the master ped settings? Any advice would be appreciated.

Good luck at the festivals.

Re: DVX Feature

minor adjustments on in camera controls...contrast and color can be controled in post (FCP4)...to transform to B&W was as simple as desaturating in post...as for lighting...that is the key in creating quality imagery...i worked with approximately 8 Lowel heads of various models and used various wattages with different diffusion or masking...the goal was to paint with light...not broad strokes and throwing light over the whole set but using one light to emphasize one area of the set....hope this helps and thanks for the response....best of luck.

Hello doncsecz

Could you provide me a download link? I would like to see the medium trailer, but it just loads and loads and loads (no movie window appearing, if there should be one), so I don't see if it's working or not. Maybe it's just my firewall.

doncsecz,

congrats on your feature.

however i too agree that this is way too long.  plus if you want to call it a "trailer" you shouldnt have running credits at the end.  this felt like 2 trailers played one after the other and the entire feature credits attached at the end.

i know youre very proud of your team of filmmakers, but for a trailer we dont need to know who your gaffer was.  i would use just the first half (up to the first time you show the film title) as your trailer.  my 2 cents.

also, you should post something like this in the "clips/footage/screen caps" (or whatever its called) section instead of here, you may get more feedback.

good use of the camera. you got skills.

Re: DVX Feature

I agree, while most of it was very nice, the few things that didn't work really hurt it.

Definitely get rid of the credits...if I had to sit through credits for every ad I saw on tv, I'd go crazy. If every article I read in the newspaper had a dedication page and "about the author," I'd quit reading entirely. Keep the credits for the movie.

Also, the dialogue going over the trailer (which works pretty well) has a lot of background noise behind it, which is especially distracting because when the voice over is not playing, there is a distinct lack of background noise. It's a subtle thing but really makes it seem less professional, especially in contrast with the very good visuals. Running a noise reducing filter through the voice over would really help, imo.

Re: DVX Feature

thanks for everyones input...i'll put it before my partner....thanks...i'll pull the credits...as for the noise reduction i've sent the entire film and trailer on HD to an associate who is going to clean that up...thanks again

Re: DVX Feature

The color temp is too warm in the beginning part of the trailer.. it feels suffocating.. hopefully the entire movie's not like that.

Re: DVX Feature

Nice effort.
Want to comment on the greek helmet on the website. It is from Achilles (15 century BC) and is greek not roman . Don't know if it is to imply Romans or not but to me it is very greek. I was raised around the area of Agamemnons grave in Greece.

Re: DVX Feature

Wow. I hope that our audience members aren't former residence of "the area of Agamemnons grave in Greece" or we're screwed. There goes submitting to that festival.

I'll make a note and we'll consider renaming the film "The New Achilles Helmets of Athens" to preserve the authenticity. However, this is not a catchy title is it? This film is not a documentary, it is a work of fiction.

Re: DVX Feature

I thought props and titles are reflecting of the theme of a movie. I am not impying there is trademark, but think of it this way. Would a movie about an island in Greece have a picture of the statue of liberty? It could, but it would have to relate to the story.
Brad Pitt is wearing this hat on the movie Troy, as Achilles. Looking at your poster I can not figure what this movie is about. I really would think that it somehow relates to Troy or Achilles or ancient Greece. Maybe that's just me.
