DVX /digibeta/Fx-1 test

This is one of the most flawed tests I have ever seen. He couldn't even capture Digibeta correctly, yet still uses it to compare, as well as the fact his shots for the SD cameras are out of focus.

Here are my own upres tests.

Here is a quick grab from my camera (pdw-510p)

Look at the bricks on the red house straight ahead. Now look at that test you linked to and see if you think that guys 570 and digibeta camera are focussed correctly!

Now for my own unscientific test. Here is a shot from an FX1;

And here is an upressed pdw530 in DVCAM mode on a similar type of shot (architecture);

Now although these are from different shots, you can still look at the sharpness of building outlines. Personally I don't think there is much difference. Further to this I tool the footage from the FX1 and output to my television as SD. When I turn the firewire off the image stays visible. So I then previewed the same shot in Vegas in its full HD resolution, and looked directly at the two versions of the same shot, both in SD and in HD. There was no real visible detail in the HD shot over the SD one.

My conclusion? The lens on the FX1 and Z1 is thoroughly incapable of resolving enough sharpness and resolution for HD. With a really good lens I am sure it could be really good (as shown by that Italian guy who hacked his FX1 apart to put a 2/3" lens on it). But out of the box I honestly do not believe it holds much advantage over high end SD cameras.

Now I realise the FX1 and Z1 are fairly cheap by comparison to even a 570. But the test the original post linked to compared the Z1 to digibeta and a 570, so I am just pointing out my own tests and conclusions between similar cameras.

Incidentally the guy who did that test admitted to me that a storm was on the way when he shot the shots outside the coffee house and therefore was in a rush to complete them, so he didn't have time to set up the cameras properly as he would have liked. I do wonder though why he didn't just go somewhere else instead of posting up his test and using it as a hardened comparison.

Complaining over.
