DVX Camera Progressive Flashing Problem

Hi,

I am using a DVX102 (PAL) and recently when I shoot in progressive, overexposed parts of the image will appear to flash/strobe on and off. I am talking about natural light here, no artificial lights. My shutter is also off and I have even tried hard resetting the camera. This appears in both the camera LCD screen and during post.

Luckily, this problem does not happen in the interlaced mode, so I can still shoot in interlaced. But I much prefer the progressive mode. Anybody else experience this?

Hi Andy,

Thanks for the reply. But nope, I have used 3 DVX cameras in progressive mode extensively over 6 years and it is the first time I see this problem. It is seen in post as well... not just on the camera LCD screen.

Imagine you are shooting a bedroom from the door. The window (during daytime) is usually overexposed. Normal footage would mainly just be blown-out whites, but I get flashing/strobing whites.... and I am talking about a static shot with no panning or movements. I really suspect my camera is faulty but I thought I just try asking here.

Are you using manual or auto focus?

When using auto focus on bright objects, i.e. glass, lights, shinny metals, the camera constantly searches, thus giving off what appears to be a strobing/flashing affect. This has happened to me many times when using auto focus.

If that is not the case, then yes, your camera needs service.

Yea i get that sometimes too. Very mildly though. And only with flourescent lights I think.

Oh, I thought you meant moving shots. Then yes I would say something is wrong with the image processing chip since it only does it in progressive.

At the cinegear expo, the panasonic product manager told me all the lcd screens are interlaced. I don't really understand it either.

Thanks Steve! It is indeed the auto focus problem! I have tried everything except changing to manual focus. When left in autofocus, it keeps switching between, say AF53 and AF54... resulting in a flashing/strobing highlights.

But this is quite puzzling as well. I have used DVX102, DVX102A and now DVX102B and it is the first time it has become really noticeable.

Thanks man, you are a life-saver. I was about to plan to buy a new camera.
