I'm going to do a shoot for a friend's music video to go right to DVD. What's the best settings for this? Thanks

Hi, just have my camera 4 days now, but this is my understanding of ways to get some extra quality in your project if you are going to go with DVD as your primary media. Hopefully others will chime in with corrections if I'm mistaken about any of the following as I haven't had a chance to test it all yet.

I think the settings mostly depend on what look you want. Use the excess luma tool in Final Cut and slap the “Broadcast Safe” filter on after all of your other filters.

If you want a film look, it's my understanding that you would want to shoot 24P Advanced and either with the anamorphic lens or in camera setting. Reasons being that you can then edit on a 16X9 timeline in TRUE 24P as the single extra frame which results in Advanced mode can easily be pulled out on capture (at least in Final Cut) using 2:3:3:2 (advanced pulldown removal) capture setting. I say 16X9 anamopehic setting or lens vs. letterbox because DVD players automatically add letterboxing for 4X3 displays, so by shooting anamorphic, you'll us more of the CCD's on your image, rather than wasting a portion of their power on the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen and your image will display properly regardless if the viewers display.

If you want 16X9 and are preparing this for broadcast however, my understanding is that using a letterbox setting either in camera or in post is preferable for this. In this case, you would use 24p (not advanced) because the standard pulldown looks better on NTSC monitors if you are editing in a 29.97 timeline, which you should be if you are preparing it for broadcast.

In summation: if you want film look with 16:9 for DVD shoot 24p Advanced with anamorphic lens or adaptor, capture at 29.97 and use a 2:3:3:2 pulldown, edit on a 24p timeline (23.98), and burn a 24p DVD in 16X9. If this is something for broadcast use 24p as opposed to 24p advanced, edit and capture on a 29.97 timeline and use letterbox.

Also, there is now a way to uprez letterboxed footage to a 16X9 aspect ratio without loosing resolution. Seems like this would be preferable to the anamorphic in camera setting as not shooting in anamorphic lets the camera do more of it's image stabilization, etc. better, and the uprezzing is supposed to be lossless. Check out the "Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9" sticky on this forum.

Coffe. While I agree with some of what Jdanstan has said, there are a few exceptions. First, you don't need to use the anamorphic adapter if you don't want to. The anamorphic adapter is good for a little added resoltuion if you are shooting for the big screen, or to be shown on a large HD screen, however, shooting 4x3 and cropping/stretching in post or shooting in squeeze mode are also an otpion.
When shooting music video, I would personally use 24pn setting if there is ever a chance that this will be broadcast. It will just save you time in the long run.
While shooting letterbox and uprezzing with other programs looks good, I highly doubt that it is directly comparable to the anamorphic adapter, there is just not the availbable resolution to begin with, but I'll have to check out that thread again.
Good luck.
