I have a couple of old DVXuser Li-ion batteries from my old DVX100 which physically fit my new HPX250 (I made sure with the charging base before attempting attachment to the camera) but I tried one out on a shoot and it powered the camera alright but it seemed like for only maybe 20% of the time I got out of the stock Panny battery. Is there any reason not to use these on the 250 other than the obvious reason that their power-time is next to useless?

There's no reason. The HPX250 and DVX100 are compatible, battery-wise, so -- if they work, use 'em.

Might be dying after that amount of time. If you want a knock off we've had luck with the Lenmar LIP-540. 60 bucks.

I have over 16 Anton Bauer Hytron 140 batteries (NiMH), 8 Dionic 90s (Li Ion). I can say that even the best battery has a decaying life span regardless whether you use it or not. Typically 3-4 years will be the shell life. One of the Hytron 140s batteries, there was only 18 cycles vs. 89 cycles. The 18 cycles (3 years life) died out sooner over the 89 cycles (1.5 years life). I have another recent Hytron 140 battery with similar diminished capacity over 3 years of little use problem. It all pointed to the original cell mfg date over how many cycles have been used. Great care was taken that they're not exposed to extreme heat. And numerous manual 12 & 24 battery calibrations helps, but it will not stop the natural decaying cell life. The advanced Anton Bauer charger tells me everything I need to know re the original mfg, # of cycles, amp hr, etc.. The Panasonic CGA-D54 is yet to be tested. But I'm willing to bet it will suffer similar fate w/ other Li Ion type of batt.
