DVX and XRAY

Hi,
I've haven't really travelled with a video camera, but I'm about to.

In general what are the rules for sending cameras and tapes through x-ray machines at the airport? Specificaly, is there anything sensetive enough in the DVX 100A that would be at risk? What about standard consumer models? Tapes?

Thank you in advance.

Thanks Pookie. I did, but was hoping for fresh information. Obviously, you have none. Thank you very much for your time. I hope you have a good day.

Fresh information......LOL

There must be something wrong with the search function on this forum because I just did a search for "xray" and x-ray" and it came up with "NO MATCHES". Shouldn't it at least have found THIS post?

OK, but how did you get that search page? When I typed in xray and x-ray as a keyword I got NOTHING.

The search engine has to be in the right mood. A while back, I wanted the plans for the DIY zoom controller. Did a search, found it. No prob.

A week later, someone else was asking about it, so I did the search again to get the link for them...the search engine said "zoom" was too common a word so it ignored it, and brought back no matches for "controller" either.

I just took my DVX to St. Thomas and it was just fine. You have to worry about EMF, not X-Ray.

As far as I know, carry-on Xray has a much lighter dose of Radiation than the luggage scanner anyhow, and also, Xray has no effect on inorganic or chemically inactive molecules, unlike human cells or undeveloped silver halides in film. Electronics and tape fall into that inorganic inactive category. If the metal detector were much more powerful, that would be cause for concern. But it's not, I've gone through a hundred airports here and abroad, loaded with tape and video cameras and Flash cards. No issues ever. Just don't leave the tapes near an unshielded thumping boombox. Permanent magnets are okay, active electromagnets are not, since they phase the metal particles on the tape away from the recorded patterns. Too much info? Sorry, I just had an intense theoretical discussion with someone, still on that tangent

Thank you SpecCom and Rush. I appreciate it. However, Rush....I'm curious about your intense theoretical discussion.

You're welcome sir.

As far as the discussion goes, I just finished my second dose of aspirin. I teach private classes in lighting and camera technique. Sometimes, after the two allotted hours are over, I chat with my student, and the discussions go off on thick tangents. This time it was supernova gamma radiation sparking mutation by allowing expression of million-year old ribonucleic acid viruses that change the shape of animal survival through selection. That old adage.

I took mine to Florida and had no problems. I have heard people say don't put your tapes through there but put them in your luggage that you check in instead. I had my tapes in my case that I carried on and again I had no problems.

That happened to me once. Had to buy another DVX from Rush after that one.

However, I have had no problems with X-ray (nor xray, for that matter). Went to Russia this year and they ran it through everything and a half. Strip-searched my camera, too.
