Re: DVX and XL2 dual rig shoot side by side video

Thanks Jared, I thought the night shots looked better on the DVX than on the XL2, might have been settings. I also noticed that the colors in the pool scene looked better on the DVX. Is the focus slower on the XL2? It was always lagging behind..

Re: DVX and XL2 dual rig shoot side by side video

Focus can only be contributed to operator as it was all manual.. the DVX definately however has a faster lens, as the night segments where all shot wide open.

Re: DVX and XL2 dual rig shoot side by side video

Great job Jarred and Co. What were the settings for the night shoots on the DVX? Any excuse to come to California ehh!

Re: DVX and XL2 dual rig shoot side by side video

the DVX has "richer colours" and is able to maintain that also at night, where the XL2 loses saturation quite dramatically.
the XL2 lens on the other hand is sharper to my eyes.

but if you switched the 2 screens and labeled them wrong nobody would really see the difference.....

Re: DVX and XL2 dual rig shoot side by side video

funny you mentioned that alp...I had to triple check the clips because some clips were so similar.

Re: DVX and XL2 dual rig shoot side by side video

In front of the carwash the asphalt is bluish on the DVX footage and like the "Absolute Power"'s color on the XL2.

Funny because on the color chart the DVX has correct red and white. The red on the XL2 isn't correct.

The wather in the pool looks more-more better/filmic on the DVX part.

Inside the carwash the picture is definitely better on the XL2.

Re: DVX and XL2 dual rig shoot side by side video

Maybe that's the secret. We should all have the Jarred setup and just use whatever sequence looks best in post! ;D

Re: DVX and XL2 dual rig shoot side by side video

ha ha.. yeah its a tough call.. it comes down to the usability on the cameras... I hated the XL2 size and the wonkey stepping iris and button settings, but to be honest since I have been shooting with the DVX for more than 500 hours I am of course gonna be a little biased to using the DVX.

Re: DVX and XL2 dual rig shoot side by side video

Just wondering if you flipped the images in post? As the video fades you show a clip of the dual rig set up and the DVX is on the left and the XL2 is on the right. But when we see the footage its the other way around.

Re: DVX and XL2 dual rig shoot side by side video

not on purpose... its just the way I laid it down on the timeline.

Re: DVX and XL2 dual rig shoot side by side video

The XL2 looks sharper than the DVX in some scenes. Someone mention the pool shot, I like the DVX shot better. Overall both cameras looked good. I perfer the DVX just because it looks more cinematic.

Re: DVX and XL2 dual rig shoot side by side video

Jarred,

Nice job! Confirms everything I have seen here as well. One thing that no one seemed to catch, the veritcal smear on the XL2, ever so faint but there. Take another look on the shot right after the ferris wheel, or on the scene with thte folks standing to the back of the fishing shack and there are three lights on a single post, there is a pronounced smear coming off of those lights.

Or how about the aliasing on the red shirt on the runner on the beach on the XL2 footage. And it seems that the really dark scenes the blacks on the XL2 just totally crush. As an example of that take alook at the pool scene. You can tell that the plants on the far side of the pool are green. Or the Beach Volley ball scene where the sand looks like sand all the way up to the edge of the video on the DVX100A.

While the XL2 smakes nice pictures, it isn't a DVX100A.

I know that sounds biased but the DVX is my baby. ;-)

Best,

Jan

Re: DVX and XL2 dual rig shoot side by side video

Great stuff Jarred, thanks for putting the effort into doing this.

I agree with some of the other posts - while very close to call in most instances, there felt a 'richer' colour feel to the DVX. Not sure why though...

Oh, and very appropriate 'Rocky' music! ;)

Re: DVX and XL2 dual rig shoot side by side video

ummmm.

while watching the volleyball night scene, I was wondering whether the left image was DVX 100A or XL2. Because the handling of the flare and smear (as around the stadium lights in the night scene) on my 100A is exactly what looked like in the window labeled XL2....and frankly not as un-DVX like (as I know it) as in the window lableld dvx100A.

Thanx for this effort Jarred

Re: DVX and XL2 dual rig shoot side by side video

Awesome stuff Jared. This solidified my decision to buy the DVX instead of the XL2 :)

Re: DVX and XL2 dual rig shoot side by side video

Jarred

Were both camera shooting 16x9? and if so did you use the anamorphic lens or squeeze on the DVX

Re: DVX and XL2 dual rig shoot side by side video

DVX was squeeze mode.. we thought of putting the anamorphic on that would par it with the rez of the XL2.. but we thought it might be a more fair review to go head to head with cameras right out of the box.

same here. first i looked at the DVX, then the XL2 then the FX1 (and Z1), but after i heard the first HDV player will be € 3700 on top of the FX1 i decided for the DVX eventually.....but i still miss some bicks to get it in. i could just sell my Betacam, but i would lose too many shots this winter...:(
