DVX and HVX SD?

Just curious, how does the HVX compare to the DVX when recording SD? Is it the same? I know the HVX can record DVCPRO 50 so I imagine it'd be much better, but then again, Panasonic is still selling the DVX. How do the two cameras compare in regular DV mode as well as the DVCPRO 50 mode?

DVX = a bit more sensitive (requires less light) than the HVX, but has 4:3 ccds.
HVX = native 16:9 and DVCPRO50!

I think the general consensus has been DVX for DV, HVX for DVCPRO50 and above

I'm doing a shoot on Sunday in SD using HVX and DVX, so maybe I'll have some real-world comparisons then.

somebody's going to yell at me for saying this, but I'll say it anyways... if you bring the gain up +6 on the HVX it's almost the same camera, lux sensitivity-wise to the DVX.. I had a dvx /hvx sd shoot for mtvU and used my HVX.. the camera matches up pretty well, even looks a tad crisper and better, with more color... i didn't notice any extra noise when I had to use the extra gain from time to time...

I did some shooting last weekend where I compared the HVX in DV mode to its DVCPro50 mode and the difference was stunning! I never want to shoot DV again (though I'll have to until they come out with those 64gb P2 cards). But seriously, if it's something you can shoot in DVCPro50, do it!
If you're comparing HVX DV to DVX DV, they really do look the same. The biggest difference there, is how much cooler and professional the HVX looks -- particularly if you can throw a follow focus and matte box on it.

Yes, when you see the HVX in real life it does look cooler than the DVX (even though I'm missing my DVX already :crybaby: hope it goes to a good home :().

However on-topic...

I've found that with minimum gain on, the DVX recording standard def DV is about the same as the DVX with gain off. So the DVX may be more sensitive but the HVX is capable of creating the same DV image under the same lighting/low light circumstances IMO.

It seems sharper, but that's because I'm used to shooting in 4:3 and converting to 16:9 after the edit, which softens it. None of that with the HVX because of the native 16:9 chips. Other than that everything seems to be the same as DVX.

It is like having a DVX built into the camera as a bonus really, apart from I can use auto-focus in cine mode :)

I am a new HVX user and have not had much first hand experience with the DVX. I've found that the HVX meets all my expectations when shooting 720/24 - just amazing pictures. But when using it on three different nights now shooting live jazz in DV (waiting for my Focus FS100) I have been totally disappointed. NOTE: Lighting conditions were * very poor*. An old XL1 that I borrowed from a friend for a B cam looked WAY better on the B roll. I've shot some DV stuff with reasonable available lighting and the HVX looked just fine - but man, HD is the way to go with this machine.
