We are looking for the next camcorder sett we gonna buy. It gonna be a 4 camcorders. It is hard to choose between DVX-XL2-and HDV comming now.

Can you post your best filmlike video. We are searching a film like motion blur.

Re: DVX 24p (25p) motion blur

You are going to be hard pressed to find any footage from the DVX that has filmic motion blur. There is a suggestion of it but it's nothing like what you would see from a real film camera. Also, in the limitations of the Web and file sizes, seeing that effect is going to be even more limited if not misrepresented.

If you are going to be buying 4 cameras, it's certainly worth your while to rent one of your prospective cameras first and test it out. Nothing here will convince you like holding it in your hands and watching the footage you've shot in the style you will be working.

Re: DVX 24p (25p) motion blur

Yeah, the motion blur really doesn't look so much like 35mm. For quick pans and handheld work I often set the shutter speed between 1/30th-1/40th of a second because it makes the motion blur seem filmier to me, even if this doesn't logically make sense as film shutters are 1/48th of a second or shorter.

Re: DVX 24p (25p) motion blur

Thanks for the replay. I like the colors of DVX. Like the XL2 as well but the DVX was more film so long. But the XL2 has open SDK. It is open for other software solution. There is a few company here in Norway using only DVX. XL2 is coming now. We are using only Sony.
I don't know how the DVX looking like as video. The Sony is sharp all the way. The customers like it. But we want shallow focus more than ever.

Our media is video, industry video and if we buy 4 ps. than it is nice to have something we can use for other media as well. You never know.

But anyway it gonna be 25p, we are in Pal-land.

It is funny. A few years ago we wanted the field-render only. And now we like motion blur. Everyone is thinking in film in this time.

Is it the DVfilm software whis is render out motion blur of the fields? I tested the demo and I can see only a perfect still picture.

Re: DVX 24p (25p) motion blur

When you use DVFilm with interlaced footage, the motion blur it renders is no better than what you are getting from the DVX.

If it's blur you want, you can get lots of it by turning the DVX shutter down to 24...but that can get to be a little too much for some scenes. Like I said, you need to play with it to get the look you want. I can tell you from first hand experience (my last camera was a DSR-250)...the difference between the PD-150 and the DVX is astounding.

Re: DVX 24p (25p) motion blur

I've never really understood anyone saying the DVX's motion rendition in 24P mode isn't the same as film. If you shoot with a shutter anywhere from 1/48 up to 1/60, you'll get *very* filmic motion. I think people see other tell-tale signs of video, and attribute the 'video look' to the *lack of filmic motion*.

If you look at well-exposed, well composed DVX footage, I bet you'll have a tough time saying the footage doesn't look "like film."

Re: DVX 24p (25p) motion blur

Of course. But it isn't film and will not look identical to it. There are certain idiosyncracies that happen in the developing process...a kind of je ne sais quoi that can't be copied.

You can't emulate an analog medium (which is how I look at film) in a digital medium perfectly but the DVX does a fine job of stripping the video look away and approximating the color gamut of film. It does not emulate the exact qualities of film motion blur but that kind of thing is not even descernible to the average eye.

Re: DVX 24p (25p) motion blur

I agree wholeheartedly that it doesn't look 100% the same as film - but the motion rendition is one thing that I *would* say was the same thing. I suppose there's a SLIGHT difference because the DVX (and all video cameras, except the Viper) has an electronic shutter, rather than a mechanical one. So this may have SOMEWHAT of an effect on changing the look. But with the right shutter speed, the stuff looks SO close.

I don't wanna sound confrontational here, so don't read it wrong, please! But I'd just like to ask what it is specifically about the motion rendition that makes it look different to you? I've noticed no difference at all - there are differences in the IMAGE that I can notice, the characteristics of how it handles exposure and such, but the motion? I really don't think so here. And I don't want to mislead any buyers of 24P cameras by saying that there is a difference in the *motion* if there indeed isn't, that's all. :-/

Re: DVX 24p (25p) motion blur

I agree with you and the "difference" I'm talking about is atomic in it's size so let's just say it's identical for the sake of argument.
